Acid vs Base
All chemical compounds are basically divided into acids or bases. Whether acids or bases. All of them can be placed on a scale known as pH scale that ranges from -7 to +7. Zero is the value of pure water and as the value decreases, it is called acidic while a value above zero places it in the category of bases or alkalis. There are similarities in acidic and alkaline solutions but there are many stark differences also that will be discussed in this article.
Acids are compounds with excess of hydrogen ions (H+) whereas bases have a surplus of hydroxide ions (OH-). When an acid is dissolved in water it releases H+ ions whereas bases contribute OH- ions to the solution. pH of a solution is the value that indicates its acidity or alkalinity. Both acids and bases are highly reactive and make many new substances after reaction with other substances. Acids react with bases to form salts.
Acids are sour in taste and have corrosive ability. They are hazardous when they come in contact with human skin. They cause a stinging sensation so one should be careful while handling acids. Some examples of acids are hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid.
Bases have a bitter taste and feel slippery like soap. They react with acids to form salts. Most of the plants are made up of bases and thus you feel bitter when you eat leaves. Strong bases, when they come in contact with skin are as dangerous as acids as they eat up skin and can cause injury to tissues.
Acids, when added to water increase concentration of hydrogen ions while bases increase the concentration of hydroxide ions. On pH scale, acids have a value ranging from -7 to 0 where -7 indicates highly acidic and this acidity decreases as this value approaches zero. On the other hand, a value of +7 indicates a very strong base.
Examples of acids in daily life are coffee, bear, soda, and fruit juices. On the other hand, blood, soap, bleaching powder, sea water etc are examples of bases. Finally, acids turn blue litmus paper red while bases turn red litmus paper blue.
