Cloths and Clothes are often confused as two words that give the same meaning when it comes to their usage. Actually there is some difference between the two words.

The word ‘cloths’ gives the meaning of ‘unstitched clothing material’ as in the sentences

1. I bought cloths for the festival.

2. I purchased cloth material for my sister.

In the first sentence you get the meaning that a person bought unstitched clothing material for a festival. In the second sentence you get the meaning that a person purchased unstitched clothing material for his sister.

On the other hand the word ‘clothes’ gives the meaning of ‘stitched clothing material’ as in the sentences

1. I purchased plain clothes for the festival.

2. He has the habit of wearing white colored clothes in his office.

In the first sentence you get the meaning that a person purchased stitched plain clothing material for the festival. In the second sentence you get the meaning that a person has the habit of wearing white stitched clothing material in his office. This is the main difference between the two words ‘cloths’ and ‘clothes’.

The word ‘clothes’ is sometimes used to indicate any type of clothing in general as in the sentence ‘he distributed clothes to the poor during his birthday’. In this sentence you get the meaning that the person distributed clothes of all kinds and types to the poor during his birthday. The clothes that he distributed might have included shirts, pants, trousers, towels and the like. This is the basic idea behind the usage of the word ‘clothes’ in the sentence mentioned above. On the other hand the word ‘cloths’ simply gives the meaning of ‘unstitched’. This is the difference between the two words ‘cloths’ and ‘clothes’.
