Double vs Twin Room

If you have been a frequent visitor to hotel because of your job or business purposes, you must have noticed that there are various types of rooms in a hotel called differently as single room, double room, twin room, and so on. Of course there are other classifications such as deluxe, suit, premium etc., but they are easily understood as they reflect the kind of facilities they offer. The double room and twin room are confusing as they both connote occupancy for two. Let us find out difference between a double room and a twin room.

First, and most importantly, though people are misled because of double and twin being synonyms, these are rooms that are classified on the basis of occupancy rather than any other facility. A twin room is also offered to 2 adults sharing the room, and a double room is also offered to 2 adults sharing the room. What then is the difference? The difference lies in the furniture being supplied in the two rooms. Whereas, in a twin room has two single beds arranged gracefully in two ends of the room, a double room features a centrally placed double bed (King or Queen sized) for adults to share while sleeping or relaxing.

A single room has typically a single bed and is fit for a single person as no extra bed will fit in. A twin room, as the name implies, has 2 single beds for 2 adults that prefer to sleep on different beds rather than sharing a bed. This is normally for 2 individuals other than a married couple. However, there are couples who prefer to sleep on different beds and surprise the booking clerk when they ask a twin room despite registering as a married couple.

A double room is strictly for adults who agree to sleep on the same bed, which is a king sized or queen sized double bed. There is a provision for an extra bed usually for kids if couple has them accompanying them. With grown up kids, it is normal for parents to book a double room for themselves, while booking a separate twin room for the kids.

This dichotomy is important for couples and other people while checking in a hotel as a couple may not be comfortable sleeping on separate single beds, while two unrelated adults might find it uncomfortable having to sleep on the same double bed.
