Feudalism vs Manorialism
Feudalism and Manorialism are two systems of thought that showed a difference between them in terms of concept and understanding. Manorial system concentrated on the organization of agricultural and craft production. On the other hand, feudalism describes the legal obligation of Lord to Vassal. This is the main difference between the two systems of thought.
Another significant difference between feudalism and manorialism is that manorialism is economic in character, whereas feudalism is legal in character. As a matter of fact, the manorialism system works exclusive of feudalism system. The system of Marnorialism survived at the individual level, and it concentrated mainly on the Lord and the peasant relationship.
On the other hand, feudalism supports legal, cultural and political ramifications at the highest levels while dealing with the relationship between the Lord and Vassal. Another way of pointing out the main difference between feudalism and manorialism is that feudalism is political system, whereas manorialism is an economic system.
It is interesting to note that both feudalism and manorialism are the offshoots of medieval life. Manorialism is otherwise called as Seigneurialsim. It talks about society in medieval western Europe and parts of central Europe and organization of rural economy. On the other hand, Feudalism had to with the relationships between men. It starts from the monarch or the king at the top to the knight, to the manor at the bottom.
A knight is in charge in the manorial system and he occupies the state or plantation. Manarialism deals with relationship between serf and the Lord. Manorialism is contained in Feudalism in the sense that Feudalism deals with multiple manors. It deals with the relationship between landlords. Description of one landlord is manorialsim, whereas description of many manors is feudalism. These are the main differences between the two systems called feudalism and manorialism.
