Jackets vs Coats
Jacket and coats often, especially now in the modern times are used interchangeably and are thought to be one and the same. This is not only true to people who have less interest in fashion but also to those who can be very well considered as fashionable.
Jacket is a term coined from undercoats. It used to be a term that refers to specific types of undercoats. It is also sometimes termed as suits. It is formal and is often paired with trousers and used in formal occasions. It appears to be a little more tailored and dressy and is often with padding and sometimes with lining, constructed lapels, piped pockets and bone or buttons.
Coats used to mean a strong item of clothing that protects an individual from an attack of a weapon, minor ones, that is. But eventually, it became more of a fashion item. It is now used by almost everyone. Its main purpose is to add supplementary warmth. coats are more casual and are most widely used in sports, thus the term sports coat.
Difference between Jackets and Coats
Coats are usually made from heavier fabric and the padding is not very visible, while, as mentioned earlier, paddings in a jacket are more often that not, very visible. Coats are made with a more relaxed feel. A jacket is understably so, more tailored, classy and clean. Thus, coats are casual whilst jackets are more formal. The coat is for everyday use, the jacket is for special occasions only. For fashion aficionados, wearing a jacket means matching such with the trousers but a coat need not be matching and besides, coats are usually patterned from the camouflage style.
Although relatively different in style and timing of use, both jackets and coats aim to provide comfort to the user.
