Mature vs Immature
Mature and Immature are two words that have different senses and usages. They cannot be interchanged in usage. The word ‘mature’ is used in the sense of ‘grown-up’. On the other hand, the word ‘immature’ has exactly the opposite meaning. It is used in the sense of ‘undeveloped’. This is the main difference between the two words.
The word ‘mature’ conveys the sense of ‘developed’ too as in the sentences,
1. Francis is a matured person in his thoughts.
2. There is maturity in his words.
In both the sentences, the word ‘mature’ is used in the sense of ‘developed’, and hence, the first sentence can be rewritten as ‘Francis is a developed person in his thoughts’, and the second sentence would mean ‘there is development in his words’.
Take a look at the following sentences.
1. Fruits appear immature in this tree.
2. What Robert spoke the other day appeared immature.
In both the sentences given above, you can see that the word ‘immature’ is used in the sense of ‘undeveloped’ or ‘unripe’, and hence, the meaning of the first sentence would be ‘fruits appear undeveloped or unripe in this tree’, and the meaning of the second sentence would be ‘what Robert spoke the other day appeared undeveloped (in thoughts)’.
It is interesting to note that the word ‘mature’ is used primarily as a verb. It has its adjectival form in the word ‘matured’. On the other hand the word ‘immature’ is used primarily as a verb and it has its adjectival form in the word ‘immature’. Thus, the forms of both the verb and adjective are one and the same in the case of the word ‘immature’. These are the important differences between the two words that should not be interchanged, namely, mature and immature.
