What would you say if the battle for supremacy is within the family? Yes, this is what is going to happen with the recent unveiling of the latest smartphone Nokia N9 by the Finnish giant. N8 was launched in the last quarter of 2010 and became popular with its exciting features. But it has to face stiff competition with its younger sibling Nokia N9 based on Meego which has arrived on the scene with faster and better performance. This article will highlight all the differences between N8 and N9 to enable new buyers to choose according to their requirements.

Nokia N8

Without even using it, Nokia N8 feels special. It looks robust in anodized aluminum body and has a superb 12 MP camera with Xenon flash. It also has a superb OLED screen. You get a special feeling the moment you pick up the smartphone with its shiny, metallic finish.

To begin with, the smartphone measures 113.5×59.1×12.9mm and weighs just 135g. It has a AMOLED capacitive touch screen that stands at 3.5 inches, and produces a resolution of 360×640 pixels (though not exceptionally high, but decent enough to make a bright and vibrant display). It has all standard smartphone features such as accelerometer, proximity sensor, gyro sensor, multi touch input method, and a 3,5 mm audio jack at the top.

N8 runs on legendary Symbian 3 OS, has a 680 MHz AEM11 processor, and packs 256 MB of RAM with 512 MB ROM. It provides 16 GB storage expandable to 32 GB through micro SD cards.It is Wi-Fi802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth v3.0 with A2DP, GPS with A-GPS, EDGE and GPRS (class 10). It boasts of stereo FM radio with RDS. It has WAP HTML browser that allows smooth browsing.

N8 is packed with 2 cameras and the rear camera is a delight for those fond of clicking pictures as it is 12 MP that shoots in 4000X3000 pixels, has a Carl Zeiss lens, is auto focus with Xenon flash and allows geo tagging and face detection. It can record HD videos in 720p@25fps. N8 also has a secondary VGA camera to make video calls.

N8 is equipped with standard Li-ion battery (1200mAh) that provides a talk time of up to 5 hrs 50 min in 3G.

Nokia N9

If you are fed up with Android and Apple OS, and want something new, try N9 from Nokia. It operates on Meego, a brand new OS that is a big departure from the legendary Symbian OS. It is packed with comes exciting new features that make it a sure shot winner such as swipe. No matter where you are inside an app, just a simple swipe at the edge of the display will take you back to home screen; so no more pushing of buttons. It boasts of three home screens that allows for a larger number of features and apps to remain at your finger tips. Let us see what it holds for a user.

N9 measures 116.5×61.2×12.1mm and weighs 135g making it light and handy. It boasts of a nice 3.5 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen with true to life 16 M colors and a resolution of 480X854 pixels. The screen makes use of Gorilla Glass technology making it scratch resistant. It is also anti glare to make for easy reading in bright lighting. N9 has accelerometer, proximity sensor, 3.5 mm audio jack and a multi touch input method.

N9 runs on Meego v1.2 Harmattan, has a powerful 1 GHz cortex A8 processor and packs a solid 1 GB of RAM. It provides for 16GB/64GB of internal storage, so no provision for micro SD cards. The smartphone is Wi-Fi802.11b/g/n, GPS with A-GPS, NFC, EDGE and GPRS (class 33), Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP+EDR, and an HTML and WAP browser that provides seamless browsing. With NFC, it’s very easy to pair and share the media contents, just touch the devices to share.

N9 has a 8 MP camera with Carl Zeiss opitcs sensor and wide angle lens at the rear side that shoots pictures in 3264×2448 pixels. It is continuous auto focus with dual LED flash. It has features of geo tagging, face detection and touch focus. It can record HD videos in 720p at 30fps. Nokia boasts N9 as the world’s first phone with Dolby Digital Plus decoding and Dolby Headphone post-processing technology. With this head phone technology you can enjoy the surround sound experience with any type of of headphone.

N9 comes preloaded with Angry Birds, Real Golf, and Galaxy on Fire. It has a standard Li-ion battery (1450mAh) that provides a talk time of up to 7 hours in 3G.
