Policy vs Legislation
Policy and Legislation are two words that show some differences between them when it comes to their connotations. The word ‘policy’ is used to denote a set of rules that is designed to reach certain goals or objectives in the growth of a company or a firm. Policies are generally centered on specialties as in the case of the establishment of a hospital that is growing popular for the treatment of nervous diseases.
A policy may concern employee welfare as in expression, ‘the company shows zero tolerance against indiscipline’. Policies normally assist decision making. It is important to note that policies are formed normally over a period of time. They are not formed all of a sudden. They grow with the concern or the firm or the education institution. Policies define the nature and the quality of the firm.
Employees of a particular organization are required to follow the policies framed by the managing committee or the Board of Directors of the organization. Legislation on the other hand refers to the process of making laws. In other words it can be said that the word legislation aims at law making. The laws of a company or an organization collectively may be called as legislation. It is interesting to note that the word legislation is derived from the Latin legis latio.
As a matter of fact each company or a firm should have legislation formed from rules and regulations or simply laws that have to be followed by the employees and employer together. Some of the laws pertaining to legislation are meant for the development of the employee relationship and some of the laws pertain to the employee behavior. Policy on the other hand is not a law but is some sort of guidance. These are the differences between legislation and policy.
