Sherbet vs Sorbet

Sherbet and Sorbet often confused by a number of people to be the same since they are both frozen desserts. They thought that Sorbet is just an English word for the Arabic word Sherbet. But the fact is that there’s a big difference between these two desserts.

Sherbet

Sherbet indeed came from Arab word sharbat which means drink and is considered before as a food for the elite families in the Middle East. It is a dairy-based frozen dessert and contains milk and sometimes eggs which makes it creamy in consistency just like that of an ice cream. In some countries, garnishes like cherries and rose petals are included in a serving of Sherbet.

Sorbet

Sorbet is believed among others to be originating from Sherbet, only it is a much healthier version. The base of a Sorbet are fruit juices or fruit purees and it does not contain any dairy products like eggs thus making it more suitable for the health-conscious people who loves to have an ice-cream like dessert but less sugar and fats.

Difference between Sherbet and Sorbet

Although Sorbet can be considered as much healthier than Sherbet, it still lacks the fuzzy ice-creaminess that a Sherbet has. Since Sorbet doesn’t have fat (since it contain no dairy products), it is icier compared to Sherbet. While Sherbet is popular in the Middle East being served at homes and considered as a sign of hospitality, Sorbet on the other hand is widely served in Europe especially as a refresher during the summer season. Most popular Sorbet flavors are coffee and chocolate whereas most popular Sherbet flavors are pomegranates and lemon.

Sherbet and Sorbet does not really differ far from each other. Just like other things, it continues to evolve as it is brought from one country to another. They may have each and unique tastes, still they have a common denominator of being a frozen-dessert that is served after a meal.

In brief:

1. Sherbet is a dairy-based frozen dessert; Sorbet base is fruit juices or fruit purees.

2. Sherbet is widely served in Middle East homes as a sign of hospitality while Sorbet is popularly served in Europe as a summer refresher.

3. Sherbet contains sugar and fats due to its dairy ingredients whereas Sorbet contains no dairy products thus making it more suitable for the vast number of health-conscious individuals.
