Accept vs Admit
Accept and Admit are two words that are often confused as words that have same meanings. Actually they are two words that give rise to two different meanings. The word ‘accept’ is used in the sense of ‘taking into consideration’ as in the sentence ‘I accept this situation’. In this sentence the word ‘accept’ is used in the sense of ‘taking into consideration’ and hence the meaning of the sentence would be ‘I take this situation into consideration’.
On the other hand the word ‘admit’ indicates the intention of ‘surrender’ as in the sentence ‘The person admitted to have committed the crime’. Here the usage of the word ‘admit’ gives rise to the intention of surrender on the part of the person. This is the main difference between the two words ‘accept’ and ‘admit’.
The word ‘accept’ gives the meaning of ‘agree to receive’ as in the sentence ‘He accepted the offer’. In this sentence the usage of the word ‘accept’ gives the meaning of ‘agree to receive’ and the meaning of the sentence would be ‘He agreed to receive the offer’.
On the other hand the word ‘admit’ gives the additional sense of ‘allow’ as in the sentence ‘The gate keeper admitted him to enter into the premises of the college’. Here the word ‘admit’ is used in the sense of ‘allow’ and the sentence would mean ‘The gate keeper allowed him to enter into the premises of the college’.
The word ‘admit’ is sometimes used in the sense of ‘getting entry’ as in the sentence ‘He was admitted into the hospital last night’. Here the word ‘admit’ is used in the sense of ‘getting entry’ and the sentence would mean ‘He got entry into the hospital last night’. These are the differences between the two words, namely, accept and admit.
