Key Difference – Accommodation vs Modification

Accommodation and modification are two terms used in the educational sphere between which a key difference can be identified. First before understanding the difference let us define the two terms. Accommodation refers to the support given to a child that helps him to access the curriculum and demonstrate learning. On the other hand, modification refers to the changes made in the curriculum content to match the student. The key difference between the two stems from the fact that while accommodation focuses on how the child learns, modification focuses on what he learns. This article attempts to clarify the difference in detail.

What is Accommodation?

Accommodation refers to the support given to a child that helps him to access the curriculum and demonstrate learning. Simply, this denotes that the child has to complete the same curriculum as others but with changes in how he learns. For instance, the child can be given extended time to complete a task or an assignment. Even in the case of examinations the child usually gets more time to finish off the exam or else some assistive technology. Accommodation also includes the setting and the level of support given to the child. Ideally, the setting should create an atmosphere where the child can concentrate. When speaking of the level of support, some children require professional support while others do not.

What is Modification?

Modification refers to the changes made in the curriculum content to match the student. This means what the student learns is changed based on the individual capabilities. In most classrooms, the teachers reduce the number of tasks and assignments that the child is expected to complete. This can be considered as a modification. Even in the case of examinations, a less complicated paper is given to the child as part of the modification.

In the case of instructions, within the classroom, the teachers use different techniques to check the child’s response. For example, imagine a case where the teacher would ask the students to write an essay. As a modification, the teacher can ask a few students to talk about the topic instead of compiling an essay. However, one of the key factors that need to be highlighted is that in modification the teacher has to have a clear understanding of what should be taught to the child and what should be excluded as it clearly affects the grade of the student.
