AMIE vs BE
AMIE and BE are both engineering qualifications. BE stands for bachelor of Engineering and is a 4 year degree course. This is an undergraduate degree after studying 4 years of various streams of engineering in a college. AMIE, On the other hand is a professional certification provided by the Institution of Engineers (IE). This is called Associate Member of Indian Institution of Engineers and an individual earns it by passing a qualifying exam conducted by IE consisting of Section A, some project work, and Section B. For all practical purposes, AMIE, awarded by IE, is recognized by the government of India as equivalent to BE for appearing in graduate level examinations such as those conducted by UPSC or for employment purposes.
Thus it can be seen that both AMIE and BE are equivalent when it comes to employment opportunities in various government organizations. At the same time, there are some private companies that give an upper hand to BE holders when it comes to selection of candidates for various positions in the organization.
The purpose of setting up Institution of Engineers in 1920 in Calcutta was to pave the way for non formal education in engineering as there were many who could not pursue regular engineering courses in various engineering colleges to obtain a BE or B.Tech degree. Thos passing the qualifying examination of IE get AMIE which is considered to be a professional degree equivalent to BE/B.Tech and become eligible for employment in various organizations. The qualifying exam is of two sections. Section A is common for all, while Section B is of the subject chosen by the candidate as his subject of engineering. The AMIE degree thus obtained has a value equal to that of BE which a student earns after 4 years of study at any engineering college.
