The verb form of analysis is analyze. To analyze is to do analysis. But the word analyses is a plural of analysis, and it refers to many different analysis done by a single scientist or by many scientists individually at different times on a single topic. This is a plural that surprises the students of English language as they are used to making plurals by adding –s or –es to most of the words. To make a comparison, hypothesis is a word that also becomes plural when es is added, but -is is deducted at the end of the word. The problem when making a plural of analysis arises because there is already an s at the end of the word. One certainly cannot change it to analysiss or analysises to make its plural.

• The pronunciation of the two words being the same, they confuse students of English language who think it to be the difference between American and British English.
