Analyses vs Analysis

Analysis is a word that is very commonly used in science and laboratories where testing of structures and chemicals is done. It refers to the study of the parts of a whole or the identification of the components of a substance. There is another word analyses that confuses many as there is only slightest of difference in spelling, and the pronunciation of the two words remains almost the same. However, despite similarities, there are differences between analysis and analyses that will be discussed in this article.

Analysis

Analysis is a noun that refers to the close study of the ingredients of a mixture or a solution in chemistry. It also refers to the separation of the whole into its constituents. In math, it is the method of proving a proposition by treating it as true and then arriving at it through a series of statements. The word is used extensively in psychology to refer to psychoanalysis that is a method to study as well as a treatment method for mental ailments. Take a look at the following examples to understand the meaning and usage of the word analysis.

• The data from the computer needs analysis.

• The scientists performed chemical analysis of the soil, to come up with its ingredients.

• The expert gave his analysis of the situation of the match.

• The professor gave a detailed analysis of the disease to the students.

Analyses

The verb form of analysis is analyze. To analyze is to do analysis. But the word analyses is a plural of analysis, and it refers to many different analysis done by a single scientist or by many scientists individually at different times on a single topic. This is a plural that surprises the students of English language as they are used to making plurals by adding –s or –es to most of the words. To make a comparison, hypothesis is a word that also becomes plural when es is added, but -is is deducted at the end of the word. The problem when making a plural of analysis arises because there is already an s at the end of the word. One certainly cannot change it to analysiss or analysises to make its plural.

Analyses vs Analysis

• Analyses is the plural form of analysis

• The pronunciation of the two words being the same, they confuse students of English language who think it to be the difference between American and British English.
