Difference Between AQUARIUMS and AQUARIA

AQUARIUMS vs AQUARIA

Aaquariums and aquaria are often used interchangeably by people thinking aquaria are a synonym of the plural for aquarium. Aquarium, as we all know is the glass structure in which fish are reared as pets and also as show pieces at various places. The word ‘aquariums’ is used to refer to a situation where two or more fish tanks are kept in a place. This may seem to be confusing for some people but we all know that the plural of fish is also fish. But when we are talking of different species of fish, we use the word fishes. Similarly, if there is more than a single aquarium, it is ok to refer to them as aquariums. But if in a place different kinds of aquariums are there, it is the word ‘aquaria’ that is used. Look at this sentence. Public aquaria are popular tourist attractions throughout the world and frequently found in zoos and marine parks.

There are people who say that an aquarium is the fish tank made of glass but when it is complete with the fish and all other required things, it becomes an ‘aquaria’. However, this is wrong perception as an aquarium, whether it is a glass tank devoid of fish, or one that is full with all the paraphernalia, is still an aquarium.
