Difference Between Argument and Persuasion

Argument vs Persuasion

Argument is a word that flashes images of people screaming at each other trying to put across their point of view. It is also a word that reminds us of debates televised on television where politicians counter the views of each other. There is another word persuasion that confuses many people because of its similarities with argument. Without presenting arguments that are persuasive, it is impossible to effect changes in attitudes, thinking, and course of action as far as behaviors are concerned. For many, it is hard to differentiate between argument and persuasion. This article attempts to enable readers to comprehend the two concepts clearly.

Argument

Any discussion in which disagreement is apparent contains arguments presented by the participants. When you see two people quarrelling or having a dispute, you get to hear differing points of views from them as they try to reason with one another. An argument thus is a justification in defense of a point of view. When the act of arguing is based upon solid principles of logic and reasoning, the act is said to be a kind of persuasion.

You argue with your teacher when you are unhappy with the grade given by her to you. You also argue with a vendor in an effort to get a lower price for the product he is selling. You present arguments in favor of your point of view when writing an essay or a blog on the internet. If you have made a statement and then need to defend it, you have to present arguments based upon reasoning, to convince others. Often, reasoning is not enough and arguments need the support of examples. One can argue if he has a position on an issue and has reasons to stand for this position.

Persuasion

Persuasion is a process that tries to change the belief or thinking of others, especially the opponents. This is done through communication based upon reasoning and logic, to make the opponent see and understand your point of view. Persuasion is considered a good way to convince as people change their behavior and attitudes not grudgingly but gladly as they understand the reasoning behind the process.

Persuasion is an art that many people have, and they are the people who turn out to be more successful when put into positions where they have to lead others.
