Difference Between Bad and Wrong

Bad vs Wrong

Bad and wrong are words in English language that we all understand fully well. While bad is the opposite of good, wrong is the antonym of right. Thus, both words are similar in meaning and connote images of decisions, situations, circumstances, and products that are not desirable and acceptable to us. However, as there is night after day and darkness after light, good and bad and right and wrong are two sides of the same coin and have to be gracefully accepted. But what if one were to ask you the difference between bad and wrong? Confusing; isn’t it. Let us find out the differences between these two concepts.

Bad

Bad is a word that is taught to us as a concept right from our childhood. We are given training to pick up good from the bad and behave like a good child. We see that we are encouraged and appreciated when we do certain things and behave in a particular fashion. We are also given the concepts of Good and evil and moral and immoral to know what is expected of us and what to do in particular circumstances, in life. We tend to equate all things that are inferior in quality as bad. Poor grades or marks in school are also termed bad while mother scolds us for our bad behavior when we do not do the tasks assigned to us in time. Even recipes are talked in terms of good and bad and we talk about the behavior of others as bringing bad taste in mouth. Poor or inferior performance of gadgets is termed as bad performance and we talk about bad attitude, bad taste in music or life in general and bad choice of clothes inappropriate for an occasion.

Wrong

Just like there are good and bad things and situations in life there are also right and wrong decisions, values, morals, quality, attitude, and even behaviors. Anything that is not right is automatically wrong or so we are conditioned to believe. However, the concepts of right and wrong are too subjective and personal despite society making it very clear what it approves and disapproves. We know that we have done a wrong thing when we pick up something valuable from a public place as we are taught that stealing is a sin and thus wrong. We grow up trying to be ideal citizens and take pride in following the rules and regulations made for us. Thus, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is wrong and it is wrong to break the traffic rules.
