Brittany Spaniel and Springer Spaniel are two different dog breeds with characteristics, which are good enough to separate them apart. However, some of the particular characteristics are discussed in this article and those would be of good interest. Their countries of origin are different despite the similarities in their names.

Brittany Spaniel

Brittany spaniel is a gundog originated in France, and originally bred for hunting. Although they are referred as a spaniel dog, they are more close to pointer or setters. They are solidly built animals but not heavy and bulky. Their long legs do not have heavy musculature. Some of them are born with naturally long tails, but some are with short tails. Usually, the long tailed dogs are tail-docked to a length between 3 and 10 centimetres. Generally, their height at withers measures from 43 to 52 centimeters, and their weight ranges from 15 to 25 kilograms. They normally come in orange roan or liver roan colours. They have a medium sized round head that ends with a wedge shaped snout. Colour of their wide nostrils could be fawn, tan, or brown depending on the coat colour. Brittany spaniels are intelligent dogs with vigour and alertness. However, they are sensitive and friendly dogs as well. They are naturally shy and should be socialized in young ages to overcome the shyness. Brittany spaniels are usually healthy and hardy dogs, and can live about 12 to 14 years.

Springer Spaniel

This is a gundog originated in England, and used for flushing and retrieving game. It is a gentle and very friendly dog characterised by its friendly wagging of tail. They are medium sized compact dogs with an average height at withers ranging from 46 to 51 centimetres, and the average weight is about 23 – 25 kilograms. They have a broad skull, which is flat on top. The nose is liver or black in colour that depends on the coat colour. Their coat colour could be either black and liver with white markings or predominantly white with black and liver markings. The breed has been developed into two types as field breed with short and coarse hairs and show breed with long and smooth hairs. Usually, springers have drooping long ears, which are covered by hair. They have dewlaps and their tails are docked usually. Springer spaniels are friendly easy going animal with a good alertness and attentiveness make it to be the ideal hunting companion that could live for 12 to 14 years.

What is the difference between Brittany Spaniel and Springer Spaniel?
