BSNL, VSNL vs MTNL

The expansion for BSNL is Bharath Sanchar Nigam Limited, whereas the expansion for MTNL is Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited.  The Videsh Sanchaar Nigam Limited is shortened as VSNL. The BSNL and VSNL were the incumbent telecommunication service providers in India. MTNL entered much later in to the industry with the restructuring of the telecommunication sector in India.

VSNL was originally the government’s arm for international telecommunication services while BSNL provided the domestic long distance telecommunication services and infrastructure. It is important to note that BSNL is used for the entire country whereas MTNL is used for metros only.

With the telecommunication restructuring in 2002, VSNL also started providing national long distance services within India in addition to international services. VSNL was taken over by the Tata Group in February 2008 and renamed now as Tata Communications Ltd. It is involved in the international wholesale voice services, including VoIP and providing wholesale and retail data and bandwidth.

MTNL is providing domestic telecommunication services and infrastructure for Delhi and Mumbai only. Domestic long distance telecommunication services and infrastructure for the rest of the regions in India are provided by BSNL.

One of the main differences between BSNL and MTNL is that the broadband of BSNL is NetONE and the broadband of MTNL is Triband. One of the main advantages of MTNL over BSNL is that MTNL is characterized by the fastest Internet connection. Moreover it is governed by the government. As a matter of fact BSNL is also governed by the government.

MTNL is for Mumbai and Delhi only whereas BSNL is for the whole of the country of India. Bharath Sanchar Nigam Limited was formed in October 2000. It is interesting to note that BSNL is world’s 7th largest telecommunications company.

The products of MTNL include Dolphin (postpaid) cellular connection, Trump (prepaid) cellular connection and WLL (CDMA). DSL is their broadband connection. MTNL has started other features too such as games on demand and video on demand.

The products of BSNL include Free Phone Service, India Telephone Card (prepaid), Account Card Calling, Virtual Private Network and Universal Access Number. BSNL’s helpdesk is very popular among its customers. The broadband of BSNL is ADSL. It is no hyperbole that BSNL is a major provider of cellular mobile telephone services using GSM platform. It has a very popular brand name of CellOne.

BSNL has a customer base of 90 million, whereas the customer base of MTNL is steadily on the rise. MTNL started 3G services in India under the name of MTNL 3G Jadoo. BSNL too offers the 3rd Generation services that include video calling, live TV, 3G video portal and full length movies. BSNL offers Internet Protocol Television whereas MTNL offers India’s first 3G Blackberry Service.
