Difference Between Cane Corso and Presa Canario

Cane Corso vs Presa Canario

Cane Corso and Presa Canario are two different breeds of dogs originated in two different European countries. If someone is not very familiar with both these breeds, it is not possible to identify a Cane Corso as a Presa Canario. Therefore, it is very important to notice the differences between them, and this article is provides enough distinctions.

Cane Corso

Cane Corso is an Italian large breed of dog kept as a guardian, companion, and hunter. They belong to the dog breed group of Italian Molosser. They have a well-developed body with a physique rich in musculature. Their height at withers is about 62 to 69 centimetres, and the standard weight could range from 40 to 50 kilograms. They have a moderately tight skin, but some dogs have dewlaps in neck area and hanging jaws. One of their distinctive characteristics is the wide and long muzzle, which in fact, is in the ration of 2:1 length to width. Cane Corso ears are medium in size and dropped forward but some owners like have their ears cropped. Tail docking is common for this breed. They commonly come with black or fawn coloured coats, and sometimes with brindle. There are white markings on the chest, toes, and chin area. Their temperament should be handled with care, and should be socialized well, as they are little aggressive from their genes. In addition, they are not friendly towards strangers, but very closely attached to their primary owners, and live about 10 to 11 years.

Presa Canario

Presa Canario or Canary dog, aka Perro de Persa Canario, originated in the Canary Islands and in Spain. They are large bodied dogs of the Molosser breed group, originally bred for working around livestock. They have a thick and muscular body with a massive square shaped head, which is powerful and capable of giving a hot-tempered bite. Usually, people crop their ears to depict their powerful and fearsome expression. The height of a male at the withers ranges from 58 to 66 centimeters, and their average weight is about 45 kilograms. They have characteristic cat-like paws, and they even walk like cats. Their body looks slightly longer compared to their height. It is a rough and short fur coat in Presa Canario and they do not have an undercoat. In addition, their coat comes in all shades of fawn and brindle and with some white on chest area, paws, and muzzle. They are normally aggressive towards strangers and others, so that a proper socialization is very important. They usually live about eight to twelve years without many health issues, if proper care is given.

What is the difference between Cane Corso and Presa Canario?

· Despite their similar looking, but different, head and snouts, they are two different dog breeds originated in two different countries, Cane Corso in Italy and Persa Canario in Spain.

· Cane Corso was developed for guarding, hunting, and as a companion dog, whereas Presa Canarios suit mostly for working livestock.

· Presa Canario is slightly longer than their height and has a cat-like walk. However, Cane Corso builds a balanced and proportionate physique.

· Muzzle of Cane Corso dogs is shorter compared with the Presa Canario dogs.

· The head and the skull are smaller, shorter, and more roud shaped in Cane Corso compared to Presa Canario.

· The corso tail is allowed to dock and the ears of the presa is allowed to crop.
