Cavalier King Charles Spaniel vs King Charles Spaniel

King Charles spaniel and Cavalier King Charles spaniel dogs are closely related and very similar looking dog breeds, but there are few differences between them. It is always good to explore the characteristics and analyse the differences. That way, the comparison makes more sense between many of the closely related animals in general, and dog breeds in particular. This article follows that format to discuss the differences between these closely related King Charles spaniel and Cavalier King Charles spaniel dogs.

King Charles Spaniel

King Charles spaniel is a small dog breed belongs to the spaniel type that originated in England. There are many referred names to the dogs of this particular breed known as English Toy Spaniel, Toy Spaniel, Charlies, Prince Charles Spaniel, Ruby Spaniel, Blenheim Spaniel, and Holland Spaniel. They have dark and large round eyes, and a short nose. Their head is domed and the muzzle is short, also the line of black skin around the mouth is noticeable. They have long drooping ears with rounded tips. The standard height at the withers is about 23 to 28 centimetres and the body weight of the animal ranges from 3.6 to 6.4 kilograms. King Charles spaniels are small built but compact animals. Owners usually dock the tails of these dogs. Their usual coat colouration would be black mixed with some tan. They are very friendly and happy dogs and have an average lifespan up to ten years. However, they do not make good watchdogs due to their friendliness, but they sometimes bark when a stranger is approaching.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavalier King Charles spaniel is another small spaniel type breed originated in the United Kingdom. They have a long and silky coat, which comes in four major colourations known as Blenheim, Tri-colour (black/white/tan), Black and Tan, and Ruby. Usually, their tails are kept undocked. Their average height at the withers is about 30 to 33 centimetres, and the average weight ranges from 4.5 to 8.2 kilograms. These dogs have a flat skull, and their ears are set in a slightly higher position in the head. They have a slightly long muzzle, but there is no black skin around their mouth. They are not hot-tempered dogs, but very friendly towards anyone, and most importantly very happy dogs. Usually, their lifespan could vary between nine and fourteen.

What is the difference between King Charles Spaniel (KCS) and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (CKCS)?

· The head of KCs is very distinctively domed, whereas it is more or less a flat head in CKCS.

· Muzzle is shorter in KCS compared to CKCS.

· Coat colouration of KCS is usually black and tan, whereas CKCS have four major coat colourations.

· The tail of KCS is usually docked, but CKCS are undocked.

· The body size of KCS is smaller compared toCKCS.

· Ears set in a slightly higher position in CKCS compared to KCS.
