CDMA EV-DO vs HSPA Network Technology

CDMA EV-DO and HSPA are 3G network technologies. CDMA EV-DO is a step towards the mobile broadband technology capable of delivering data rates higher than 2Mbps in mobile environment. It is significant that EVDO technology uses many techniques which are used by HSPA while achieving spectral efficiency including turbo coding, adaptive modulation schemes etc. HSPA is a packet based technology that can theoretically deliver a data rate of up to 14.4 Mbps downlink and 5.8 Mbps uplink at maximum.

CDMA EV-DO (CDMA Evolution Data Optimised )

CDMA EV-DO consists of three major releases as specified by 3GPP2 as part of CDMA 2000 standards namely

o CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Release 0 (Rel 0)

o CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A (Rev A)

o CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision B (Rev B)

It is significant that currently deployed networks use Release 0 and Revision A with 2.4 Mbps and 3.1 Mbps downlinks with uplinks 153kbps and 1.8 Mbps respectively. The bandwidth of the radio channels used here is 1.25MHz resulting in a lower data rates compared to UMTS. The significant feature of these types of networks is that their backend is full packet based network. Revision A networks are capable of delivering good Quality VoIP since the uplink is having data rates similar to HSUPA. It is significant that Revision B type networks have not been commercially utilized yet.

HSPA (High Speed Packet Access)

HSPA is the terminology used to refer to HSDPA (3GPP Release 5) and HSUPA (3GPP Release 6), which are packet based technologies Evolved having much higher data rates compared to 3G and GPRS. HSPA+ or the HSPA (Release 7 and beyond) is also in the family of HSPA and it will correspond to 3GPP LTE standards. Most of the time it is referred to as the technology for 3.5G networks. Theoretically HSPA data rates can go up to 14.4 Mbps downlink and 5.8 Mbps uplink at maximum which are 3-4 times of existing 3G downlink speeds and 15 times higher than GPRS. But the current networks are capable of providing 3.6Mbps downlink and 500 kbps to 2Mbps uplink most of the time with radio channel bandwidth of 5MHz. While upgrading the networks to HSPA from 3G (WCDMA) it is required to transform existing downlink to HSDPA(High Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology and uplink to HSUPA(High Speed Uplink Packet Access) technology. It is significant that these upgrades are mostly software updates rather than hardware upgrades for most of the WCDMA networks. Higher data rates are possible due to higher order digital modulation schemes like 16QAM to 64 QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) with MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology.

Difference between CDMA EV-DO and HSPA

1. CDMA EV-DO radio interface bandwidth is 1.25MHz and HSPA utilizes 5MHz bandwidth.

2. Date rates for CDMA EV-DO are around 2Mbps in downlink and HSPA is capable of providing peak rates up to 14.4 Mbps in downlink (HSDPA).

3. Data rates for CDMA EV-DO uplink is 153kbps starting from Release 0 within a single carrier and HSPA is capable of providing uplink speed up to 5.8 Mbps using HSUPA.

4. CDMA EV-DO standard is developed for 3G networks mostly and HSPA is considered to be 3.5 G network technology.
