Of late, there has been a lot of buzz surrounding purity and chastity rings. Because of increasing materialism and advocacy of free sex in the west, the problems of child abuse, teen pregnancies and rate of divorce have gone up in the society forcing people to come up with an ingenuous idea of making use of silver made finger rings to help young boys and girls to remain pure and chaste. These rings are called by different names such as promise ring, purity ring, and chastity ring, but the basic purpose of all such rings is to abstain from sex and remain celibate. In this endeavor, the rings help in reminding the wearer to have pure feelings and behavior. Let us see if there is any difference between a purity ring and a chastity ring.

A misconception in other parts of the world is that, teenagers and young adults in the west are after sex. Outside world thinks that teens in US are vulgar and are interested in sex only. The reality cannot be farther from this thinking, and there are millions of teenagers disgusted by this image. Purity and chastity rings came into existence in 1990’s and became popular soon thereafter. They were advocated by Christian groups advocating celibacy or sexual abstinence and people wore them as representation of their promise to remain pure and chaste. Teens bought and wore it with pride to show that not all teenagers in the west are after sex and romance. Parents also bought these rings and presented them to their children.

The aim of purity and chastity rings was to remind the user not to engage in sex or sexual behavior, and girls used them to tell the world about their intentions of remaining virgin until marriage.

Purity Ring

Christ is the sign of purity in Christianity, and most designs of purity rings contain crosses to reflect this fact. These rings are in fashion among teenagers in the US, and they wear these rings to tell the world their pure thoughts and desire to stay away from sex.

Chastity Ring

Chastity rings are used mostly by young ladies to vow and stay away from sex. These rings are worn by girls, to declare their virginity and stay that way until they get married. Even married women wear these rings to reflect their feelings. Upon marriage, chastity ring, which is worn on the third finger, has to be replaced by wedding ring.

 

What is the difference between Chastity Ring and Purity Ring?

• Both chastity and purity rings reflect the desire of the wearer to stay away from sex.

• It is not that anyone wearing a purity ring or chastity ring cannot engage in sex, or he/she would go to hell, if he/she did so. These rings are symbolic in nature and are a promise to one self to abstain from sex.

• There is basically no difference between a purity ring and a chastity ring.
