Conservatism vs Liberalism
Conservatism and Liberalism are two types of schools of thought that showed tremendous difference between them. Liberalism believes in the significance of liberty and equal rights. On the other hand, conservatism tries to promote the maintenance of traditional institutions. In other words, it aims at conservation of tradition. This is the main difference between the two schools of thought. Based on these main differences, conservatism and liberalism has many more different characteristics. Edmund Burke is known as the father of conservatism. Meanwhile, John Locke is considered as the first person to develop a liberal philosophy. Let us see some more information about these two ideologies.
What is Conservatism?
Conservatism aims at the preservation of things as they are and thus they are not for any kind of change when it comes to the functioning of things. Conservatism is looked upon as an attitude. It was not looked upon as a philosophy. It was regarded as a constant force that helped in the development of the society. Conservatism is looked upon as an ideology by some of the thinkers of the past.
Several variants of conservatism were known until now. They include liberal conservatism, libertarian conservatism, fiscal conservatism, green conservatism, cultural conservatism, social conservatism and religious conservatism.
Conservatism nowadays expects the government to function as a small scale institution allowing more of individual responsibility for everyone. Rather than expecting the government to solve every problem, conservatism believes that every individual should take more responsibility in solving problems.
Some examples of the traditional views of conservatism are here. For example, conservatism believes that abortion is not acceptable. It upholds the traditional value that a baby conceived is equal to an already functioning and living human being. Also, conservatism does not agree with euthanasia. Conservatism refuses to believe that letting a terminally ill person commit suicide is ethical. When it comes to death penalty, people who hold conservative ideas believe that it is the rightful punishment for the crime of killing another person. This is going with the traditional belief that the punishment should fit the crime.
What is Liberalism?
Liberalism believes in liberty and equality. It believes that there should be minimum or no government interventions in political institutions or religions as these are supposed to be areas where anyone can be involved freely. Also, liberalism expects the government to ensure that people have their equal rights.
It should be said that liberalism connects various intellectual trends and schools. It is important to know that two kinds of liberalism became known world-wide. Classical liberalism became known widely in the eighteenth century, whereas social liberalism became hugely popular in the twentieth century. On the other hand, liberal philosophy was used in American Revolution and the French Revolution. It only means that liberalism was looked upon as a philosophy.
The primary concern of liberalism is to develop the world free from government intervention or, if it is not possible totally, then it would aim at the lessening of government intervention. Liberalism firmly believed that governments were stumbling blocks to individual success and hence they wanted the governments to stay out of individual lives. Moreover, liberalism supports fundamental ideas such as constitutionalism, liberal democracy, human rights and freedom of religion.
Some examples for liberalism are here. For example, liberalism believes that abortion is acceptable. It upholds that a woman has the right to do what she decides with her body and a fetus is not a living human being. Also, liberalism agrees with euthanasia. Liberalism believes that even a terminally ill person has a right to die with dignity if he or she wants to. See, this is liberty and freedom in doing what one wants. When it comes to death penalty, people who hold liberalistic ideas believe that the death penalty is not the rightful punishment for the crime of killing another person. Liberalism believes each death penalty has a chance of killing an innocent person.

This hasn’t been true of “liberalism” since WW2. Liberals are now openly on the side of Big State.

Then they aren’t liberals. It’s an literally an oxymoron.

This is wrong at least as it applies to the United States! Liberals believe is state control thus sacrificing individual rights for the “greater good” while Conservatives prioritize the rights of individuals, personal responsibility, and smaller government with limited powers. The “greater good” argument has proven a fallacy because of the self preservation and competitive characteristics of human nature.

Those whom we often call “liberals” or “progressives” in the US are really just Leftists (usually Marxist or some other form of “far-Left”) or welfare-state liberals. They’ve deviated from classical liberalism and libertarians–which are groups that actually have some overlap with American conservatism. For whatever reason we continued to call them “liberals” and it became a derogatory term for conservatives to use. Real liberals are actually the types most conservatives can get along with.

You describe Conservatism, because they believe in the “greater good”, and retaining it based on their personal views and opinions. And you then want to ascribe Conservatism to Liberalism. LOL! If you think Liberals are about the “greater good”, while sacrificing individual rights and freedoms, then clearly you do not know what Conservatism not Liberalism means. You then want to change definitions because you wan to be a Conservative, while you actually want what Liberalism is. LOL! You’re confused, clearly. The definitions on this page are real and true, and have been understood by those who are educated and knowledgeable about those two ideas.

Deborah. Who are the “Chosen Few”?

The right wing conservatives choosing to change agreed upon definitions so that they can make themselves feel better about being against individual rights and freedoms for all. If you do not like or agree with the definitions of Liberalism, then that’s fine. What is not fine is for you to change the definitions to better suit your opinions. The American right wing politics want to ascribe the want of “Big Government” onto the left liberal wing. And that is absolutely BS. What Liberals prefer is for government to PROTECT individual rights and freedoms, and ensure that ALL/EVERYONE gets those same rights and protections. That is nothing like wanting “Big Government”.
Example, Conservatives want that big government to impose their moral beliefs that an abortion is wrong, and that government should impose punishment on a woman who makes that choice. Liberals prefer to allow the individual woman to make her own choice and decision regarding her pregnancy. In this case, it the Conservatives who want that BIG GOVERNMENT to intervene and take away an individual woman’s right to free choice and freedom to do what she wants with her body. Liberals want government to not dictate what a woman must choose, rather, Liberals want to protect the woman’s right to make her own choices.
Conservatives are not comfortable knowing that while they want their own individual rights and freedoms, well, those same rights and freedoms should not be given to others who do not share their own personal religious and/or moral beliefs. That’s why the conservatives commenting here, and all over our country, keep trying to redefine what a “Liberal” is, so that they can attack those people who truly value individual right and freedom and protection. Conservatives use big government to force others to believe as they do, and if they do not, then they want big government to punish those who exercise and fight for their rights and freedoms. Most conservatives are quite confused about what they really know about themselves. The basic definitions on this page are true, even though Conservatives clearly don’t want them to be, as they try to change the definitions, to yet again, control what others should believe, be, do and not do. Conservatism is counter to the pursuit of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for the individual.
