Difference Between Conservatory and Orangery

Conservatory vs Orangery

Conservatory and Orangery are two types of construction that show enormous differences between them. A conservatory is built with glass so as to provide a magnificent view of the garden outside and the landscape beyond. It has been around since the early 18th century. It is interesting to note that conservatories were used long back to store plants that could not survive in the open due to harsh north European environments.

The very purpose of constructing a conservatory has changed in the present times. People construct conservatory to lead a life of luxury by looking at it as an additional living space that adds to the pleasure of the inmates of the house. Thus the very purpose of the constructing a conservatory is lost now. Building a conservatory is more a status symbol now. A conservatory is now an additional room that allows natural light that gets filtered into the space provided in the room.

An orangery on the other hand looks like a conservatory but is built with more of glass. One of the main differences between conservatory and orangery is that orangery is usually more expensive to build. It is interesting to note that orangery is designed in different styles to suit the preference and the choice of the individual who likes to construct it.

A conservatory uses more PVC in its construction with glass paneling and a translucent roof. On the other hand an orangery is constructed resembling a conservatory to a great extent. The biggest difference one can see in the construction of an orangery is that it uses brick too. The use of brick in the construction of orangery is to ensure added privacy. This kind of privacy is not available in the construction of conservatory. A conservatory is also built to suit the preferences of individuals.
