Difference Between Cottage Cheese and Cheddar Cheese

Cottage Cheese vs Cheddar Cheese

Cottage cheese and Cheddar cheese are two types of cheese that show some sort of difference between them. Cottage cheese is a kind of flavored cheese curd product. On the other hand, Cheddar cheese is a kind of hard yellowish white cheese. This is the major difference between the two types of cheese.

Cheddar cheese has derived its name from a village by that name situated in Somerset county of England. That is why Cheddar cheese is a very popular kind of cheese in England.

Cottage cheese is prepared out of curd from which acidity is removed. The same cottage cheese when pressed becomes farmer cheese and pop cheese. It is important to know that several varieties of cottage cheese are prepared from milk and they possess different levels of fat too.

One of the finest advantages of cottage cheese is that it can be eaten by itself. Of course, it can be eaten along with tomatoes, salads and with fruit too. On the other hand, the texture of Cheddar cheese is firm and sometimes contains big crystals of calcium lactate. Cheddar cheese appears to be more brittle when compared to several other types of cheese.

Although, Cheddar cheese is most popular in the United Kingdom, it is produced world-wide and in countries such as Australia, United States, Netherlands, South Africa, New Zealand and Belgium among many other countries.

Another main difference between the two types of cheese is that cottage cheese contains more amount of casein protein when compared to Cheddar cheese. This is virtually the reason why cottage cheese is preferred by bodybuilders and weightlifters. The amount fat in cottage cheese is low.

Pregnant women are advised to eat cottage cheese during pregnancy, and they are not advised to eat the other types of cheese including Cheddar cheese. Some of the important elements present in cottage cheese include vitamin A, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, sodium and zinc.

Cheddar cheese is prepared from the milk of the cows, and it is pasteurized very frequently. This is not the case with cottage cheese. Also, in making of the cheddar cheese, the curd is pressed well to remove the whey fully and left to dry at room temperature, which is not in the case of cottage cheese.  Cheddar cheese due to its hardness requires special type of packing. It is normally packaged in larded cloth or in black wax. There are a few varieties of Cheddar cheese as well.

The variety of Cheddar cheese by name Quickes bagged the award of the best cheese in the year 2009 given by the British Cheese Association. While, cottage cheese is very popular among dieters Cheddar cheese is not very popular among the dieters.

It is important to know that fat free cottage cheese is available in several parts of the world. To compensate for the low fat content in the cheese, more sugar is added in the cottage cheese to bring in additional flavor. Salt too is added to the cottage cheese for taste. These are the important differences between cottage cheese and Cheddar cheese.
