Difference Between DNS and DDNS

DNS vs DDNS

DNS and DDNS are a set of protocols comprising of TCP/IP. DNS means Domain Name System whereas DDNS means Dynamic Domain Name System. Because users cannot remember the numeric IP addresses of different websites that is why Domain Name System was developed.

Domain Name System

DNS is a set of protocols comprising of TCP/IP. DNS serve and DNS client are the two software components that are used to implement Domain Name System and both of these software components run at the background.

Numeric IP addresses are used to identify network resources. However, it is difficult for the network users to remember these numeric IP addresses. The database in DNS records the alphanumeric names for all network resources corresponding to IP addresses of different websites. These alphanumeric names are user friendly. This makes the network resources to be remembered easily by the network users.

The DNS server and the client service provided by Microsoft in Windows Server 2003 uses the DNS protocol that is used in the TCP?IP protocol suite. In TCP/IP reference model, the DNS is located at the application layer.

In a network having Windows Server 2003, the domain name system is used for all types of name resolution. When Windows server 2003 user specifies a name then the server contacts the DNS server in order to resolve the name that corresponds to an IP address of the website.

Dynamic Domain Name System

There are some computers that change their IP addresses frequently. Unless your website does not changes with that particular IP address, this is not an issue at all.

However, Dynamic DNS is used to in order to avoid this situation. Using this system, a web server or website can be maintained easily and there is no need to worry that other users may not be able to access it.

Each time you connect to the internet, a temporary IP address is assigned to your machine by the Internet Service Provider. This lasts till you disconnect from the internet. In case, if you update your website during the internet session then the IP address of the website will also change. The tracking of your website will be difficult for the computers that are not equipped.

However, this will be taken care of by the Dynamic DNS which changes the IP address of your website correspondingly. So, the person who wants to access your website does not require to type in the exact IP address of your website.

The Dynamic DNS can be in the form of hardware of software. Routers and other networking components comprise the hardware part of dynamic DNS.

Note: DNS system can be implemented in intranet as well with private IP addressing scheme.

Difference between DNS and DDNS:

• DNS is static which means it remains fixed for a particular domain whereas Dynamic DNS changes is dynamic in nature which means it changes every time.

• Both the systems comprise of the TCP/IP protocol.

• Both DNS and DDNS are developed because users cannot remember the numeric IP addresses of different websites.
