Dual vs Double
In a world where we have dual camera devices, dual SIM phones, dual certifications and dual layered DVD’s, it becomes clear to all that we are facing two and not one thing in a single device or a person. Dual has been equivalent for double just as tri is for three and single is for one. However, some contend that there are differences between double and dual and it all depends upon the context where the word is being used. Let us take a closer look.
To put things straight and in perspective, dual does stand for double when used in phones for dual SIM or dual cameras as it tells the buyer that he would be getting the advantage of making use of two SIM or two cameras. But wait, as things are changing fast in the electronic world, a double SIM phone of yesteryears has today become a dual SIM phone. Let us find out the differences.
Earlier a dual SIM did mean installation of two SIM cards inside a phone, but the user was not able to keep both the numbers active at the same time. One of the SIM remained inactive, and you could not receive calls on the inactive number until you changed your preferences by deactivating one and activating the other SIM. However, the latest phones having two SIM cards are revolutionary in the sense that both the numbers remain active at any given time, and by pressing a button a person can make use of either numbers to make a call. This obviously gives extra convenience and extra use of the same phone.
When it comes to double layer DVD’s and dual layered DVD’s, many are puzzled as to which of the two is better for them, and if there are any differences between the two types of DVD’s. In a dual layer DVD, two layers of standard DVD (DVD-5) are joined together with a thin reflector in between. The bottom layer is read first just as a standard 4.7GB DVD and then the laser focuses a fraction of a millimeter beyond this bottom layer to read the 2nd layer. There is no difference between dual and double layer DVD and the two terms are used by competing DVD manufacturing alliances.
When it comes to academics, dual degree or double degree programs include two separate institutions (or even the same institution) and a student fulfills the requirements of both the degrees in such a fashion that he completes both the courses in a time less than it would take a student to complete either of the two degrees.
