Difference Between Eczema and Psoriasis

Eczema vs Psoriasis

Eczema is a disease condition of the skin. The medical term dermatitis may be used to describe this condition. The term dermatitis itself gives the clue. The suffix “ITIS” at the end is used to describe the inflammation. So eczema is an inflammation of the skin. There are common features of inflammation; Redness, warm, pain and swelling are those. Here itching of the skin is the prominent feature. Most of the eczema are present with dry skin. However, some types can be present with watery discharge from the skin. Usually there is a family history of eczema in affected individuals. The people who affected by bronchial asthma may develop eczema also. The reason for the eczema is not very clear; however the immune system plays a role.

Eczema usually affects a small area. However it can develop all over the body. Some eczema are due to allergic reactions. This is called contact dermatitis. Some metal or leather (in wrist watches/ foot ware) may cause the irritation and lesions. Infant may develop greasy pealing of scalp or eyebrows. This is called seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Psoriasis is another type of skin disease. Like eczema the proper reason for this disease is still not clear. However psoriasis usually affects systemically, at the same time this can also cause joint pain (Psoriatic arthritis).The skin over the joints are not affected by psoriasis. However in eczema, the flexure aspect of the joints is affected.

Like eczema, most of the psoriasis lesions are dry. However some types may develop pustules (Pus collections).

Both eczema and psoriasis affect the person’s social life as these may produce UGLY appearance. Both can be treated with local application of steroid drugs. However severe psoriasis may need Light therapy (Ultra violet A). The ultra violet A rays may increase the chance of developing cancer in the skin. Sun light may be beneficial in psoriasis. However, some type of eczema (Photo dermatitis) may increase when exposed to sunlight.

In summary, both eczema and psoriasis are skin conditions. Both diseases have some connection with human immune system, but the definite cause not yet is identified. Eczema may be associated with asthma. Psoriasis causes joint pain in some cases. Eczema usually affects the flexure aspect of the skin, but psoriasis usually will not affect. The treatment for severe psoriasis is PUVA (Psoralen and ultraviolet A phototherapy). Use of UV A may increase the chance of cancer in Psoriasis cases.
