EMT vs Paramedic
Because of the way they are projected in TV serials and Hollywood films, nearly all of us know about EMT’s and Paramedics. We love them the way they go about performing their duties, running ambulances and providing help when it is needed most. These are men in uniforms providing rescue and relief operations to victims of accident or disaster. But we are often confused when it comes to differentiating between an EMT and a Paramedic. In the field of emergency medical services, there are different certifications to decide the level of care provider. EMT, which stands for emergency medical technician, is the most common of these care providers. They are men in uniforms who are entry level care providers. Even this entry level service is divided into EMT-1 (or EMT-basic) and EMT. After EMT-1, there is EMT, and above them are the paramedics. But just because EMT is the entry level care provider, it doesn’t mean that he lacks in any basic skills. In fact, it is these EMT’s who use their skills to save many patients from life threatening situations. Many of today’s paramedics, and even doctors and nurses have used their certification of EMT to advance in their careers.
Difference between EMT and Paramedic
CPBoth EMT and paramedic use their skills and knowledge to transport patients and provide them with emergency care. The biggest difference between an EMT and a paramedic lies in the amount of education they receive and what they are allowed to do to provide relief to patients. Whereas the course of EMT comprises 120-150 hours of education, paramedic course is long taking 1200-1800 hours. While both are provided training in CPR, giving patients oxygen, administering glucose and providing relief to an asthmatic or allergic patient, an EMT cannot provide treatment that requires breaking of skin. This means they cannot make use of needles. Paramedics have advanced knowledge and skills and know a lot more about anatomy, physiology, cardiology and medications than EMT’s. In short, they build upon the skills acquired while doing EMT course and learn more advanced techniques of help and care.
