Although a eulogy and tribute can both express praise and gratitude towards someone, there is an important difference between the two. First let us define eulogy and tribute before going into the difference between the two words. A eulogy can be defined as speech or piece of writing praising someone. On the other hand, a tribute refers to an act, statement or gift intended to show gratitude or respect. The key difference between eulogy and tribute is, the eulogy is mostly delivered at the death of an individual in instances such as funerals, but tributes are given in various situations. This article attempts to clarify the difference further. First let us begin with the word eulogy.
What is a Eulogy?
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a eulogy can be defined as a speech or piece of writing praising someone. A eulogy is delivered in honor of a deceased person. This can take the form of a rather formal speech that is delivered at a funeral service, praising the deceased person.
There are some exceptions to this as well. In a situation where the family and close friends wish to express their gratitude and love towards a very sick person, a eulogy can be used. The delivery of the eulogy is usually by a family member of a friend of the deceased. However, eulogies can also be delivered for the living as well. For example in the case of a special party or celebration such as a retirement eulogies are delivered. In such a context, it expresses the gratitude for the individual. What is a Tribute?
A tribute refers to an act; statement or gift intended to show gratitude or respect. Even in our lives there are people that we love and care about for whom we are truly grateful. A tribute is given for such people. Tributes can be given in honor of a person or else in a memory of a person. When we say in honor of, it highlights respect for the person. When we say in memory of a person, it is usually to commemorate someone that we loved and cherished.
However in the ancient days of kings, tributes were given as a sign of respect for the king or Lords as well. Also when people wanted to show allegiance, tributes were given. These ranged from gold to animals. In some cases, the kings demanded tribute from the people, if not they had to suffer dire consequences. This highlights that there is a clear difference between a eulogy and tribute.
