Difference Between Exemption and Exception

Exemption vs Exception

Exemption and Exception are two words that are often confused due to the similarity in their forms and morphology. Actually there is some difference between the two words, namely, exemption and exception. The word ‘exemption’ is used in the sense of ‘freedom’ or ‘exclusion’. On the other hand, the word ‘exception’ is used in the sense of ‘omission’. This is the main difference between the two words.

The word ‘exemption’ is used as a noun, and it is formed out of the verb ‘exempt’. On the other hand, the word ‘exception’ is used as a noun and it is formed out of the verb ‘except’. Take a look at the following sentences.

1. Francis got an exemption in the first year of his post graduate course.

2. Angela applied for an exemption of fees.

In both the sentences, the word ‘exemption’ is used in the sense of ‘exclusion’, and hence, the meaning of the first sentence would be ‘Francis got an exclusion (of papers) in the first year of his post graduate course. The meaning of the second sentence would be ‘Angela applied for an exclusion of fees’.

On the other hand, take a look at the following sentences.

1. All the boys passed in the examination with the exception of David.

2. Robert is an exception in this case.

In both the sentences, the word ‘exception’ is used in the sense of ‘omission’, and hence, the meaning of the first sentence would be ‘all the boys passed in the examination with the omission of David’, and the meaning of the second sentence would be ‘Robert is an omission in this case’. The word ‘exception’ is sometimes used in the special sense of ‘specialty’. These are the differences between the two words that are confused, namely, exemption and exception.
