Flop vs Commercial Failure

Flop and commercial failure are used in connection with anything that has been introduced in the market but has not been a success. All products and services are launched to earn money and to make the project successful. Many a times, too much money is spent in advertising and promotion to make the venture successful. But, there are situations when there are subtle differences between the two concepts. Here is a little discussion to point out the difference between flop and a commercial failure.

There are many movies which cannot be considered as flops as millions went to cinema halls to see them but they were still labeled as commercial failures. This happened because the cost of producing these films was too high. So despite being hits and not flops, these films were branded as commercial failures. There are many movies that have won critical acclaim from the audiences as well as critics but were commercial failure as everyone involved with the production lost money.

Let us take up another example. Suppose a famous pop singer is invited to perform in a foreign country and her tour is a flop as not as many turn up to see her concert as expected. Despite this, the tour may be commercial success as after paying her fees, the promoter may have made huge money as he kept tickets too expensive. However, the tour can be both a flop as well as commercial failure if the promoter also lost money if sufficient tickets did not sell to cover the costs.
