Difference Between Goblet and Wine Glass

Key Difference – Goblet vs Wine Glass

Goblet and wine glass are two common stemware that can be seen in a formal dining table. The key difference between goblet and wine glass is their shapes and intended use. Goblets are often used to serve water and have a wide rim and a deep bowl. Wine glasses, as the name implies, are used to serve wine, and their shapes vary according to the type of wine.

What is a Goblet?

A goblet is a drinking glass with a foot and a stem. This type of stemware basically has four parts: rim, bowl, stem, and feet.  The term goblet is mostly used to refer to a glass that is used to water; hence, it is also known as a water goblet. A water goblet usually is usually larger in size; it has a wide rim and a deep bowl. The glass is also thicker than an average wine glass. Goblets also have textured or ornate designs, which set them apart from wine glasses.

What is a Wine Glass?

A wine glass is a glass stemware that is used to taste and drink wine. An average wine glass holds 8 to 12 ounces when filled to the rim.

The shape of the wine glass is known to affect the flavor and aroma of the wine served in that glass. Thus, wine glasses are made in various shapes to balance the flavor and bouquet and enhance the best characteristics of specific wines. Some glasses have wide and round bowls and others have deep and narrow bowls; some others have rims that curve inward or outward. Let’s look at some common shapes in wine glasses and their uses.

Red Wine Glasses

Glasses that hold red wine have a rounder and wider bowl and a rim; this shape is supposed to increase the rate of oxidation. Red wine glasses can be further classified according to different wines. For example, Bordeaux glass is tall and has a broad bowl; it is designed for full-bodied red wines. Burgundy glass, which is designed for more delicate red wine, is broader than the Bordeaux glass.

White Wine Glasses

White wine glasses have a smaller mouth; the bowl is narrower and generally thin with a longer stem. White wine glasses can also vary in shape and size.

Champaign Flutes

Champaign flutes have a long stem and a narrow bowl. This unique shape helps to show the effervescent qualities of champagne.
