Governor vs Senator
Governors and senators are important public figures in United States polity. There is a bicameral legislature at the federal level in the country with the upper house being called the senate. Members of this senate are called senators with each state of the country providing two representatives to the upper house. Governor is the head of a state just like the President is the head of the country. There is often debating between people as whether it is the Governor or the senator who holds an upper hand in politics. This article attempts to delineate the roles and responsibilities of these two public representatives to clarify such doubts.
Senator
There are two houses or chambers in the bicameral system of polity in the US. While the upper house is called senate, the lower house is called the House of Representatives and together they make up what is called the US Congress. Two representatives from each state become senators, and with 50 states in existence, there are at present 100 senators in the upper house called senate. All states, no matter what their size or population provide two senators to the senate. This means that the number of senators in US Congress is not on the basis of proportional representation. A senator serves for a 6 year term and belongs to a house or chamber that is considered deliberative and not following partisan politics as is the case with the members of the house of representatives that represent their constituencies and have to keep in mind the hopes, aspirations, and sensibilities of the people of their constituency to have hopes of being elected again. The two representatives of the state bring the culture of their state to the senate.
Governor
All states in US elect their executive head called Governor. A Governor is equivalent to the President of the US being the head of the state just as President is the head of the country. There are thus 50 Governors in all, and they are heads of their states. Governor has a big role to play in his state as he has to power to control the affairs of his state. The responsibilities of governors are more or less similar to those of the President of the US, but only that Governors play their roles at the state level.
What is the difference between Governor and Senator?
• A senator is a representative of his state and brings the cultural flavor of his native state to the senate.
• There are 2 senators from each state totaling 100 senators as there are 50 states in the country.
• Each state of the country has an executive head much like the President of the country. This executive head is known as Governor.
• While senators are busy passing laws concerning national issues while keeping in mind the interests of their states, Governor is responsible for running the affairs of his own state with no direct role in national politics.
• Many Governors in the past have proceeded to become a senator of their state.
• There is nothing to suggest that a Governor is higher or more important than a senator. It is just that he plays his role at the local level while a senator plays his role at the federal level.
