Grace vs Mercy

Grace and mercy are two of the most used words these days not only pertaining to the religious aspect. However they are usually misunderstood as to how profound these two words are.

Grace

Grace is often said to be a blessing that we do not necessarily deserve. In the scope of Christianity, this is defined as the love of God that has been bestowed to man, despite of his own shortcomings and frailty to sin. It can also be described as the generosity that we get to receive albeit unexpectedly, maybe in part to asking a favor or just wishful thinking.

Mercy

Mercy is defined as fortitude or compassion shown to someone who has done something wrong. It encompasses forgiveness in terms of someone doing an error and accepting the fault that was done either by oneself or by another person. It is an act in which one shows forbearance and kindness to someone. In the Christian faith it is often said that mercy is giving out compassion to someone you have authority over.

Difference between Grace and Mercy

Grace is unmerited favor, which is basically receiving something that you don’t deserve. In a religious concept, it is the fact that God gave man so many blessing without even asking for anything in return. It is purely done out of absolute love. These blessings come in ways that no amount of self sacrifice can make up to repay those gifts. Mercy, on the other hand, is considered as giving the provisions that someone deserves. It is more on not receiving the expected negative effect that is done by someone, even though he knows that he fully deserves it.

Both are needed in terms of holistic existence and that they usually go together. These values are rooted based from the long standing history of Christianity, these are deep rooted within the integral core of each person that it is encouraged to be practiced each day.

In brief:

• Grace is often said to be a blessing that we do not necessarily deserve. It can also be described as the generosity that we get to receive albeit unexpectedly, maybe in part to asking a favor or just wishful thinking.

• Mercy is defined as fortitude or compassion shown to someone who has done something wrong. It is more on not receiving the expected negative effect that is done by someone, even though he knows that he fully deserves it.
