Gross Weight vs Net Weight

Knowing the difference between gross weight and net weight is necessary for consumers as often they are duped by companies when they include the weight of the packing while announcing the weight of the product. You are often impressed by the packing of soap without realizing you are being charged for it when the gross weight printed on the packing is 100 gram, but when you see the fine print, you find that there is also a net weight printed in small font that says it is 80g. This means you are actually getting just 80g of soap for the price of 100g soap. Thus, it is important to look for net weight, paying no attention to the gross weight, as it can be misleading at times. Let us take a closer look at gross weight and net weight.

The concept of gross and the net is an important one, and one that is being used since ancient times. It is not just weight where this concept is applied, but even used to make a difference between an individual’s gross salary and his net salary. Gross salary is always higher than his net or take home salary, and the net salary is always calculated by subtracting all deductions. Net and gross weights are particularly important in the case of tonnage of a ship or a vessel carrying cargo. If you take a look at the tonnage of a ship, you will be bewildered by scores of tonnage being employed by a ship, to include definitions of tonnage used in various countries.

What is the difference between Gross Weight and Net Weight?

• Gross weight and net weight are two important concepts that are used by manufacturers, to inform the amount of the contents.

• Gross weight is the total of the actual weight of the product plus the packaging weight.

• Net weight is the actual weight of the product without any packing material.

• If the packing is beautiful, but heavy, consumer is actually paying for the packing rather than product, which is a wrong practice.
