Difference Between Hammer Drill and Impact Drill

Hammer Drill vs Impact Drill

Electric drill is one of the integral power tools these days in all sorts of tasks whether masonry or carpentry. With the passage of time and advancement of technology, the ordinary drill has become much more specialized and is performing complex operations. Two of the subtypes of latest drill machines are hammer drill and impact drill having their own pros and cons and being used for specialized jobs. There are people who do not know the real difference between these two mean machines and as such cannot really appreciate their important features. This article attempts to highlight the differences between hammer drill and impact drill, to enable readers to use the better drill for the task at hand.

Hammer Drill

As the name implies, this is a special drilling machine that makes the user feel as if someone is hitting at the back of the machine so as to move the drill in the opposite direction much more quickly that it would have had there been no hitting at the back. If you have heard about jackhammer that hits the target with precise motion and frequency, you would feel you have just the power tool like it in your hand. Hammer drill is of special use while drilling through hard surfaces like concrete, cement etc as it creates extra force to move forward. Hammer drills are really very fast and furious and make the drilling work easy.

Impact Drill

This is another of the special ones that are available these days making drilling easier and quicker. Imagine having a drill machine that works like a regular drill but, in addition, creates torque so that it rotates in the clockwise direction faster than a regular drill making drilling fast and efficient. This drill makes driving even long screws easy and fast. Impact drill is great for driving screws in cabinets and other DIY projects. As against ordinary drilling machines, impact drill does not keep pounding the screw directly on its head but makes driving easier through an additional torque. It is like adding the force of a wrench to an ordinary drill.

What is the difference between Hammer Drill and Impact Drill?

• Hammer drill works somewhat like a jackhammer by providing an additional thrust of a hammer to the rotational motion of the drill

• Impact drill is a special drill that provides and additional torque to make drilling faster and more efficient

• Hammer drill is used whenever the surface is really hard like concrete, ground, or cement

• Impact drill is used whenever there is a need to drive long screws in the cabinet or other DIY projects
