Difference Between Hope and Expectation

Hope vs Expectation

Hope and expectation are two words that are often confused due to similarity in their connotations. Strictly speaking there is some difference between hope and expectation.

Expectations are often characterized by unfulfilled desires. On the other hand hope is not about unfulfilled desires. Hope is always about something which is likely to happen. Expectations are mostly unlikely to happen. This is one of the main differences between hope and expectation.

Hope is all about imagination of the probable whereas expectation is sometimes about imagination of the improbable. Expectation leaves you in control whereas hope leaves it to chance or probability.

Expectation is a much more active mindset when compared to hope. This is because of the fact that when you hope something you leave it in the hands of destiny. On the other hand in the case of expectation you will go all out to get it completed.

You are directly influencing the outcome in expectation whereas in hope you are not directly influencing the outcome. In certain areas expectation fares better whereas in certain areas hopes fare better.

Thinkers are of the opinion that expectation sometimes can be equated to the state of hoping against hope. Another important difference between hope and expectation is that expectation may or may not be realistic. On the other hand hope is always about being realistic.

Expectation often brings in surprise. Hope does not regularly bring in surprise. This is because of the fact that you can see reality in hoping something. On the other hand due to the absence of reality in expectation, it often ends in surprise.

Expectation results often in disappointment whereas hope does not often result in disappointment. Your mind is in a state or preparedness in the case of hope. On the other hand your mind is not in a state of preparedness in the case of expectation.
