HTC Jetstream (Puccini) is an Android tablet by HTC officially announced on August 2011 it will be officially released on 4th September 2011. Apple iPad 2 is the latest version of the last year’s largely successful iPad by Apple Inc. iPad 2 was officially released in March 2011. Following is a review on the similarities and differences of the two devices.
HTC Jetstream
HTC Jetstream is an Android tablet by HTC officially announced on August 2011. The device is one of the first tablet devices compatible with LTE network. This tablet is also known as the much speculated HTC Puccini.
The tablet is 9.87” long and has 7” of width. HTC Jetstream will be available in Black color. The device is also 0.51” thick and weighs 709 g. The tablet is average in weight for a 10.1” tablet, but quite thick. HTC Jetstream has a 10.1” capacitive touch screen with WXGA (1280 x 768 pixels) resolution. The screen is multi touch, also has Accelerometer and Light sensor. The device will be available with a digital pen called HTC Scribe. A digital pen was also included in the 7” HTC Android tablet ‘HTC Flyer”, and this will be available for HTC Jetstream free of charge for a limited time, after the official release.
HTC Jetstream will be running on a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor. Details on memory and internal storage are not yet available. However, the device allows extending storage up to 32 GB by a micro SD card. HTC Jetstream (a.k.a Puccini) will be one of the first tablet devices supporting AT & T’s true 4G network (LTE 700/AWS) with LTE speed. The device will also support HSPA, Wi-Fi connectivity as well as Bluetooth. The device also has USB connectivity as well.
HTC Jetstream has an 8 mega pixel rear facing camera with Dual LED flash and auto focus. The rear facing camera is also capable of video capture. A 1.3 mega pixel camera is also available as a front facing camera, which can be used for video conferencing.
HTC Jetstream is powered by Android 3.1. This is the first tablet by HTC with Honeycomb and includes resizable widgets plus improved multi-tasking, browsing, notifications, and customization. HTC also testing the HTC Sense UX user experience for the first time on Honeycomb. The tablet is reportedly pre loaded with many social networking applications such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Friendstream. Google applications such as Google search, Gtalk and Gmail will also be available. A YouTube client and Picasa integration is also available on the new HTC Jetstream. It also supports Adobe flash player for a rich web browsing experience. Additional applications for HTC Jetstream can be downloaded from the Android Market place.
HTC Jetstream also includes a 7300 mAh battery, which is a decent capacity for a tablet.
This latest 10” tablet by HTC is priced at $ 700 for a two year data plan by AT & T. Postpaid tablet customers of AT&T also have the option for a new $35, 3 GB monthly data plan with the two-year contract.
Apple iPad 2
iPad 2 is the latest version of the last year’s largely successful iPad by Apple Inc. iPad 2 was officially released in March 2011. A significant change in software is not visible; however hardware modifications can be seen. iPad 2 has definitely become thinner and lighter than its predecessor and has benchmarked the industry standards for tablet PC’s.
iPad 2 is designed ergonomically and users may find it a little smaller than the previous version (iPad). The device remains 0.34″ at its thickest point. At nearly 600g the device cannot be called a light weight device. iPad 2 is available in Black and White versions. iPad 2 is complete with a 9.7” LED backlit multi touch display with IPS technology. The screen has a finger print resistant oleo phobic coating. In terms of connectivity, the iPad 2 is available as Wi-Fi only, as well as, a 3G version.
The new iPad 2 has a 1 GHz dual core CPU called the A5. The graphics performance is reportedly 9 times faster. The device is available in 3 storage options such as 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. The device supports 9 hours of battery life for 3G web surfing and charging is available via power adapter and USB. The device also includes a three-axis gyroscope, an accelerometer, and a light sensor.
iPad 2 comprises a front facing camera, as well as, a rear facing camera, but in comparison to other cameras in the market, the rear facing camera is of less quality, though it can record up to 720p HD video. In still camera mode, it has 5x digital Zoom. The front camera can be mainly used for video calling called “FaceTime” in iPad terminology. Both cameras have the capability to capture video as well.

As for accessories iPad introduces the new smart cover for iPad 2. The cover is designed seamlessly with iPad 2 that lifting up the cover is capable of waking up iPad. If the cover is closed iPad 2 will immediately go to sleep. A wireless keyboard is also available and it’s sold separately. Dolby digital 5.1 surround sound is also available via an Apple Digital Av adapter sold separately.
The cost of ownership for an iPad is perhaps the highest in the market to own a tablet PC. A Wi-Fi only version can start at 499 $ and go up to 699 $. While a Wi-Fi and 3 G version can start from $629 to $829.
