Difference Between HTC Puccini and Motorola Xoom

HTC Puccini vs Motorola Xoom

HTC Puccini is the much speculated Android Honeycomb tablet from HTC. It is still not available in the market. Motorola Xoom was released to the market during January 2011. According to the information released both tablets seem to have more similarities than differences. Following is a review based on the similarities and differences of the two devices.

HTC Puccini

HTC Puccini is the much speculated Android Honeycomb tablet from HTC. It was expected to be launched in June, but it’s not released as yet. Speculations are that HTC Puccini is a 10.1 inch tablet with Android Honeycomb (Android 3.0) as the operating system. If above speculation is correct HTC Puccini will be the first tablet produced by HTC running the Android tablet OS.

Following many other android tablets with Honeycomb, it is expected that HTC Puccini will have a 1280 x 800 resolution display. The tablet is also expected to have 1.5 GHz dual core processor. The tablet will, without doubt, have a touch screen with HTC sense interface, but unlike many of its contemporaries, HTC Puccini will come with stylus support. It should not be a surprise as HTC flyer (a previous tablet from HTC) also had stylus support.

The camera is expected to be 8 megapixels with a dual-LED flash. Cameras with lower specifications also render quality images. There for it’s hard to imagine any users complaining on camera quality.

With Android Honeycomb installed, one can expect customizable home screens, flash support, Gmail client for Android Honeycomb, YouTube client and hopefully the movie editing application as well. However it is clear that widgets and UI components will align with HTC sense. Users can also expect the normal PDF reading, at least view facility for documents, presentations and spreadsheets. Android has improved the music application for Android Honeycomb with neat user interface. Only time will tell how HTC sense will present it to their eagerly waiting consumer.

The most important update on HTC Puccini is its 4G LTE radio compatibility. If HTC Puccini can truly support data rates of 4G it will definitely have an advantage over its many competitors.

Motorola Xoom

Motorola Xoom is an Android tablet released by Motorola in early 2011. Motorola Xoom tablet was initially released to the market with Honeycomb (Android 3.0) installed. It is also reported that the Wi-Fi version as well as the Verizon branded versions of the tablet support Android 3.1, making Motorola Xoom one of the very first tablets to run Android 3.1.

Motorola Xoom boasts a 10.1 inch light responsive display with 1280 x 800 screen resolution. The Xoom has a multi touch screen and a virtual keypad is available in Portrait and landscape mode. The Xoom is designed more for landscape mode use. However, both landscape and portrait modes are supported. The screen is reportedly impressively responsive. Input can be given as voice commands as well. In addition to all above Motorola Xoom includes a compass, a gyroscope (to calculate orientation and proximity), a magnetometer (measure strength and direction of magnetic field), a 3 axis accelerometer, a light sensor and a barometer. Motorola Xoom has a 1 GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage, and 1GHz dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor.

Unlike earlier versions of Android the batter indicator, clock, signal strength indicator and notifications are at the very bottom of the screen. All applications can be accessed using the newly introduced icon at the top right hand corner of the home screen.

Honeycomb in Motorola Xoom also includes productivity applications such as calendar, calculator, clock and etc. many applications can be downloaded from Android market place as well. QuickOffice Viewer also comes installed with Motorola Xoom allowing users to view documents, presentations and spreadsheets.

A completely re-designed Gmail client is available with Motorola Xoom. Many reviews on the device claims that the interface is loaded with many UI components and it’s far from simple. However users can also configure Email accounts based on POP, IMAP. Google talk is available as the instant messaging application for Motorola Xoom. Though the video quality of the Google talk video chat is not of the best quality the traffic is well managed.

Motorola Xoom includes the Music application redesigned for Honeycomb. The interface is aligned with the 3D feel of the android version. Music can be categorized by artist and album. Navigation through albums is easy and very interactive.

Motorola Xoom supports up to 720p video play back. The tablet reports an average 9 hour batter life while looping a video and browsing web. A native YouTube application is also available with Motorola Xoom. A 3D effect with a wall of videos is presented to users. Android Honeycomb finally presents video editing software named “Movie Studio”. Though many are not very impressed with the performance of the software it was a much needed addition to the tablet OS. Motorola Xoom has a 5 mega pixel camera with an LED flash at the back of the device. The camera gives good quality images and video. The front facing 2 mega pixel camera can be used as a web cam and gives standard quality images for its specifications. Adobe Flash player 10 comes installed with Android.

The web browser available with Motorola Xoom is reportedly good in performance. It allows tabbed browsing, chrome bookmark sync and incognito mode. Web pages will be loaded and quickly and efficiently. But there will be occasions the browser will be recognized as an Android Phone.

HTC Puccini and Motorola Xoom are both two tablet devices running Android Honeycomb (Android 3.0) released by HTC and Motorola respectively. HTC Puccini is still not released to the market but Motorola Xoom was released during the first quarter of 2011. While HTC Puccini is speculated to be 10.1 inch tablet the market already knows that Motorola Xoom is a 10 inch wide display. Motorola Xoom as a touch screen with 1280 x 800 resolution and HTC Puccini is also expected to have a similar resolution. Motorola Xoom was initially released with Android 3.0 and later few versions supported upgrade to Android 3.1. Only time will tell if HTC Puccini will be released with Android 3.0 or Android 3.1. The biggest difference one needs to note between the two tablets is the support for a stylus HTC Puccini will most probably have and the lack of support for a stylus in Motorola Xoom. As the first Android tablet of HTC, HTC Flyer had support for magic pen (what HTC call their stylus), there for it is safe to expect the same from HTC Puccini. The exclusion of a stylus is not really an issue for Motorola Xoom since the UI is designed to be operated with finger. HTC Puccini will no doubt have applications such as the notepad to utilize the stylus. Another difference between HTC Puccini and Motorola Xoom will be their UI design. The proprietary UI technology of HTC is “HTC sense’. As all HTC devices came bundled with this it can safely be expected in HTC Puccini as well. The proprietary UI design of Motorola is “Motoblur”; however Motorola Xoom was released with the standard Honeycomb UI. Additionally, from the details received, HTC Puccini is expected to have an 8 megapixel camera, which will render better images than the 5 megapixel camera found in Motorola Xoom.
