There are some vendors who are always one step ahead of their competitors. These vendors are innovators. They invent categories of products and excel in them before others can even enter into that market and that competitive edge rewards for a long time. It’s actually not that certain vendor been monopolistic because they are actually inventing a new market. One such vendor is Apple. When they initiated the demand for tablets with their iPads, it was the perfect market to capture. Nobody was able to come even close to them for some time because iPads were that rich. There are some reviewers who claim that the usability of iPads is unmatchable even now, although I reckon that is an exaggeration. In any case, we have seen three generations of iPad now; the 3rd generation iPad, which Apple prefers to call as ‘The new iPad’ was unveiled on 7 March 2012, finally clearing the mysteries of iPad 3.

We have picked up a new tablet from another manufacturer trying to challenge and enter the market. The Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD is the next in line of the MediaPad series that surfaced sometime back. While Huawei is not a mainstream vendor, they have a good track record of manufacturing similar products. Thus, here we will have a look at Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD and the new iPad individually, and then compare them against each other.

Huwei MediPad 10 FHD

Huawei MediaPad is designed to excel in three fundamental usage patterns generic to the tablets; the purpose of gaming, viewing multimedia content and browsing internet with reading e-books. We agree with that comment from the chairman of Huawei Devices and we’ll demonstrate exactly why in the next paragraphs. MediaPad 10 has 10 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, which features a super resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels at a pixel density of 226ppi. If you have the slightest experience in tablets, you would know that this display panel offered by Huawei MediaPad is one of the best available in the market. As far as I’m concerned, as of now, only Asus and Acer have display panels of this magnitude and even their ones don’t have rich pixel density as this. In simple terms, this is a display you can use in broad daylight and still have a clear view; this is a display that has an ultra-high resolution, which is only offered by few laptops, and has such rich color and image reproduction. With this display, reading texts would be just as clear as when you’re reading them on a paper.

MediaPad has a pleasing design and the ergonomics are agreeable. The slate is of 8.8mm thickness and 898g of weight. It comes in either Black or White, but that wasn’t confirmed at the MWC. MediaPad is made a beast using 1.5GHz quad core K3 processor on top of Huawei K3V2 chipset with 2GB of RAM. The reins of control lie with Android OS 4.0 ICS, which we consider ideal for that job. It is indeed a beast trying to burst open the reins and come out. Both the processor and chipset are proprietary devices from Huawei and thus, we aren’t really familiar with them. The specs sound all good, and Huawei claims this as the fastest tablet. Of course, it’s needless to say that MediaPad would perform better than any dual core tablets out there and with 2GB of RAM; it has plenty of memory in abundance to make the user experience smooth and perfect. It comes with super-fast LTE connectivity that can gracefully degrade to HSDPA when the reception is not good. This is something that lacked in Eee Pad and Huawei has treated it well. It also comes with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for continuous connectivity, and the fact that it can act as a wi-fi hotspot makes you the favorite among your friend because you can share your super-fast internet connection. Huawei has also included a 8MP rear camera that has autofocus and LED flash along with geo tagging. I have to say, I’m no fan of taking snaps with a tablet, but nonetheless, this has a great camera and, what’s more, it can capture 1080p HD videos @ 30 frames per second. It also has 1.3MP front facing camera for the purpose of video conferencing. Unfortunately, we don’t have statistics on the battery usage, so we won’t be able to provide that information.

Apple iPad 3 (The new iPad)

There have been many speculations about Apple’s new iPad because it had such a pull from customer’s end. In fact, the Giant is trying to revolutionize the market again. Many of those features in the new iPad seem to add up to a consistent and revolutionary device that is going to blow your mind. As rumored, Apple iPad 3 comes with a 9.7 inches HD IPS retina display that features a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels at a pixel density of 264ppi. This is a huge barrier that Apple has broken, and they have introduced 1 million more pixels to the generic 1920 x 1080 pixels display which used to be the best resolution a mobile device provides. The total number of pixel adds up to 3.1 million, which is actually a monster resolution that hasn’t been matched by any tablet currently available in the market. Apple guarantees that iPad 3 has 44% more color saturation compared to previous models, and they have shown us some amazing photos and texts which looked wonderful on the big screen. They even cracked a joke about the difficulty of displaying the screens from iPad 3 because it has more resolution than the backdrop they were using at the auditorium.

That’s not all about it, the new iPad has a dual core Apple A5X processor at an unknown clock rate with quad core GPU. Apple claims A5X to offer four-times the performance of a Tegra 3; however, it has to be tested to confirm their statement but, needless to say, that this processor will make everything work smooth and seamlessly. It has three variations for internal storage, which is enough to stuff all of your favorite TV shows. The new iPad runs on Apple iOS 5.1, which seems like a great operating system with a very intuitive user interface.

There is a physical home button available at the bottom of the device, as usual. The next big feature Apple introduces is iSight camera, which is 5MP with autofocus and auto-exposure using a backside illuminated sensor. It has an IR filter built into it which is really great. The camera can also capture 1080p HD videos, and they have smart video stabilization software integrated with the camera which is a good move. This slate also supports the best digital assistant in the world, Siri, which was supported by iPhone 4S only.

Here comes another stabilization for the wave of rumors. iPad 3 does come with 4G LTE connectivity apart from EV-DO, HSDPA, HSPA+21Mbps, DC-HSDPA+42Mbps. LTE supports speed up to 73Mbps. However, currently 4G LTE is supported only on AT&T network (700/2100MHz) and Verizon network (700MHz) in the U.S. and Bell, Rogers, and Telus networks in Canada. During launch, the demo was on AT&T’s LTE network, and the device loaded everything super-fast and handled the load very well. Apple claims the new iPad is the device that supports most number of bands ever, but they didn’t say what bands exactly. It is said to have Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for continuous connectivity, which was expected by default. Fortunately, you can let your new iPad share your internet connection with your friends by making it a wi-fi hotspot. It is 9.4mm thick and has a weight of 1.44-1.46lbs, which is rather comforting, though it is slightly thicker and heftier than iPad 2. The new iPad promises a battery life of 10 hours on normal usage and 9 hours on 3G/4G usage, which is another game changer for the new iPad.

The new iPad is available in either Black or White, and the 16GB variant is offered at $499 which is rather low. The 4G version of the same storage capacity is offered at $629 which is still a good deal. There are two other variants, 32GB and 64GB which comes at $599 / $729 and $699 / $829 respectively without 4G and with 4G. The preorders started on 7 March 2012, and the slate will be released to the market on the 16th of March 2012. Surprisingly the giant has decided to roll out the device in US, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland and Japan at the same time which makes it the biggest rollout ever.

Conclusion

We were expecting a crowned prince from Apple when they started inviting the media personnel to their new iPad unveiling event. But when the specs were announced, everyone was wondering whether they were having over-expectations from Apple. iPad 3 (The new iPad) is certainly a monster in terms of the display panel featuring a resolution that no one has ever achieved before. Besides that, there seems to be a lot of ambiguity involved in the processor. Some say it’s a quad core processor, but it’s actually an Apple A5X dual core processor that is known to be clocked at 1GHz although the clock rate is not confirmed. The perception of quad core comes in to play when we take the specs of the GPU used in Apple new iPad which supports quad core technology. If that’s the case, Huawei MediaPad has the Huawei K3V2 chipset which has GPU of 16 cores. Thus, in order to truly grasp a benchmark in performance, we will have to perform some tests on both these tablets and then come into conclusion. But at a glance, I’d say the quad core CPU would override the performance offered by the dual core CPU in Apple iPad 3 (new iPad). Other than that, MediaPad also has better optics and it’s both slimmer and lighter than the new iPad. However, we cannot enforce any purchasing decision on you, it is all your’s.
