HVGA vs WQVGA
HVGA and WQVGA are two of the many combinations of height and width of graphic display resolutions on computer monitors and display screens of handheld devices such as mobile phones. Such terms have become very common in the form of specifications that are issued whenever a new electronic gadget such as a laptop, computer monitor or a mobile handset is launched in the market. There can be countless combinations of height and width, and some of these have been accepted as industry standards and given acronyms to let people know the dimensions as soon as they see these acronyms. HVGA and WQVGA are two such acronyms. Let us see the difference in these two terms.
HVGA
HVGA, also called half size VGA, the screens here have a 3:2 aspect ratio (480X320 pixels), 4:3 aspect ratio (480X360 pixels), 16:9 aspect ratio (480X272 pixels), and even 8:3 aspect ratio (640X240 pixels). The first aspect ratio is used by many manufacturers in their PDA devices. There are various devices sporting HVGA and it was the only resolution that appeared in Google Android in the initial stages. HVGA resolutions were very commonly used for 3D graphics on television in the eighties.
WQVGA
This is also referred to as wide QVGA and has the same resolution as QVGA and the height in pixels is also the same, but it is wider than QVGA. WQVGA resolutions are mainly used in touch screen mobile phones with resolutions such as 240X400, 240X432, and 240X480. Some popular models using WQVGA are Sony Ericsson Aino, Samsung’s Instinct, and Apple’s iPod Nano.
