iPhone 4 vs iPod Touch

iPhone 4 and iPod Touch (4G) are both 4th generation iPhone and iPod from Apple. iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS are the earlier versions of the iPhone. The iPod previous versions are iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano and iPod Classic. iPod has been the most popular media player of all times and now it has got a new avatar in iPod Touch. People say that it is a killer device that is almost same as iPhone 4. Even Steve Jobs while unveiling it said that it is an iPhone without a contract, but is it really so. Both are wonderful devices (almost mini computers) capable of doing a lot of things such as gaming, music playing, video playing, capturing photos and videos and browsing etc. Of course iPhone 4 is a phone while iPod Touch is a MP3 player. But apart from this obvious difference, this article intends to find out the difference between iPhone 4 and iPod Touch to let readers decide which device they would like to go with depending upon their requirements.

It is true that both iPhone 4 and iPod Touch look alike, and I am not talking about physical similarities alone. They have the same operating systems iOS 4.3, same A 4 processor, and same display at 3.5 inches with retina display technology apart from support for FaceTime video conferencing. There are many who would go on to say that iPod Touch is an iphone without the phone, but this is not true and below is a list of the major differences between the two devices.

iPhone 4 has got a better camera

Though both devices have dual cameras, iPhone 4 beats iPod Touch hands down with its superior cameras. While the rear camera in iPhone 4 is 5MP that records videos in HD at 720p, the rear camera in iPod Touch is a mere 0.7 MP with 960X720 pixels that does record HD videos. However, front cameras in both the gadgets are similar in nature that record videos at 30 frames per second.

Internal memory

This is where iPod scores over iPhone 4 as it is available in models up to 64 GB which allows the users to store media files twice in number and size as in iPhone 4 that has maximum storage capacity of 32 GB.

Phone

This is the biggest difference between the two. While iPhone 4 is a phone per se, iPod touch can access the internet but you cannot make voice calls using it.

Size difference

As is expected with more features, iPhone 4 is heavier than iPod Touch. There is a bit of a difference in dimensions. Whereas iPod Touch stands at 4.4X2.3X0.28 inches, iPhone 4 has dimensions of 4.5X2.31X0.37. iPhone 4 is also heavy at 4.8ounces as compared to 3.56 ounces of iPod Touch.

Pricing

There is not much of a difference in pricing of the two gadgets. In fact, upfront cost of iPhone 4 (16 GB) is a little less than that of IPod Touch with 32 GB capacity.

Touch screen technology

The display of iPhone 4 with IPS technology is much more impressive than the display of iPod Touch that uses LCD technology.

RAM

Here also iPhone 4 is ahead of iPod with a 512 MB RAM as compared to 256 MB of iPod Touch.

Oleophobic screen

iPhone 4 has used this technology that keeps fingerprints and smudges down to minimum, whereas within 15 minutes of use, you can see a lot of marks on the screen of iPod Touch.

Speed

Despite having a lesser RAM, iPod performs well with it’s a 4 processor. But when it comes to multitasking, one can see that iPhone 4 is a clear winner.

It is clear from the above comparison that both iPhone 4 and iPod Touch are wonder gadgets that are very similar to each other while having significant differences. If you are looking for a complete package including multimedia capabilities, it is better to go with iPhone 4, while if music is you are mainly concerned with, iPod Touch may be the obvious choice.
