Aikido is one martial art that has many similarities with Judo. There are many who feel that these two are same martial arts just taught differently by her masters. However, despite similarities, there are differences that will be talked about in this article.
Judo
Judo is a system of self-defense that evolved out of ancient Japanese martial art of Jujutsu. It is a modern combat sport that is played at the level of Olympics and is popular in nearly every country of the world. Jigoro Kano is believed to be the creator of this martial art who developed it in 1882 taking a few techniques from jujutsu and making a few of his own. Judo soon caught the imagination of people of other countries and today we have many variants of judo found in several countries such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Russian Sambo, and so on.
Judo is a very competitive sport but is still a soft martial art as there is less emphasis on striking and more on grappling and throwing. Judo players are known as judokas, and it is played in a white dress, held in place with a robe. This uniform is referred to as judogi or keikogi.
Aikido
Aikido is a Japanese martial art that was created by Morihei Ueshiba that lays emphasis on spiritual growth and teaches self-defense to the practitioner. Ai means harmony and ki means universal energy. Do is Japanese for the way of doing. Thus, this system of self-defense teaches people to live in harmony with universal energy.
Aikido seeks to neutralize the force of the attacker by asking the practitioner to blend with his motion changing the direction of force of his attack. Thus, there is no wastage of energy and the practitioner makes use of the energy of the attacker to defeat him rather than taking him head on. Aikido is believed to have evolved from the ancient martial art called Daito-ryu-Aiki-jujutsu.
