It was at the turn of the 20th century that black students in American colleges and Universities found themselves at the receiving end of racism. Black Americans and Africans were treated badly just because of the color of their skin. As a mark of protest against the prevailing circumstances and to show solidarity towards the black community, 10 black students formed a society called Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. on January 5, 1911. These 10 bright students went on to become entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors, and scientists, something that was unthinkable at the height of racism in America. The fraternity celebrated its centennial year in 2011, and the celebrations are continuing till date.

Though the year marked the successful completion of 100 years of the fraternity, it was also time for the members of this fraternity to reflect on their achievements and to work with renewed vigor to fulfill the dreams of the founders of the fraternity. Although racism no longer exists and there is no discrimination seen or felt on American college campuses, the members of the fraternity, called nupes, have agreed to work with zeal and energy to achieve excellence for people of all hues in every field of human endeavor.

To be a member of the fraternity, a person needs to have obtained a GPA of at least 2.5 out of 4 at the college level. He must hold a bachelor’s Degree from a college or a university to be considered an alumnus of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
