Kindle has long been undisputed leader in E book reader segment. Though, reading books physically turning their pages one by one is a joy hard to beat, you cannot carry loads of books when traveling, do you? Kindle has made it easier to read any book one likes while in travel mode, and with every new version, Kindle is getting better and better. Though, ever since iPad has been launched, sales of Kindle have slowed down, two popular models of Kindle, the Kindle DX and Kindle 3G have been selling in huge numbers, and make an ideal gift for people of all ages, especially seniors. Here is a quick comparison of the two models of Kindle.
When one takes a glance at the two e readers, first thing that strikes is size difference in display of the two devices. While DX has a monster of a size with 9.7 inches, Kindle 3G has a much smaller display standing at 6 inches. If you use specs or have any difficulty with a small screen size, it is prudent to go for DX despite it being much expensive than Kindle 3G. Both DX and 3G use high contrast E ink Pearl screen, which is at least 50% brighter with greater contrast ratio than the screen of earlier Kindle models. The screen resolution of DX is higher than 3G model with 825×1200 pixels while 3G has only 600×800 pixels.
It is surprising that despite having a much larger display the dimensions of DX are not that huge in comparison to Kindle 3G model. While 3G stands at 7.5×4.8×0.335 inches, Kindle DX has dimensions of 10.4×7.2×0.38 inches. However, you feel the difference when you hold both devices in your hands. DX is double the weight of 3G model of Kindle with 3G weighing 8.7 ounces, while DX weighs 18.9 ounces. One thing that disappoints though is the fact that the storage size of both Kindles is same, and stands at around 3500 books. Kindle 3G is a miser in comparison to DX model. Whereas DX finishes off in just 7 days when used wireless mode and lasting 2-3 weeks with wireless off, Kindle 3G lasts for 10 days in wireless on mode and around a month in wireless off mode. While both support wireless 3G, it simply means there are no monthly wireless bills. No settings are required and you are ready to surf, shop, and download once out of the box.
