Difference Between Knit and Crochet

Knit vs Crochet

The difference between knit and crochet can be a little hard to understand for a novice because, at a glance, the products of each appear to be alike. Knitting and crocheting are hobbies that are great pastime activities. Knitting and crocheting also help in creating something of use and show. There was a time when these two hobbies were considered very important, and a girl, not knowing them, found it hard to get married at times. With the passage of time, however, knitted and crocheted products were produced on machines on a huge scale and the market got flooded with such products. As a consequence, knit and crochet almost disappeared from the scene. Of late, however, there is a revival of sorts in these two activities. Ladies are taking up on them big time as these activities are not only creative, but also they allow a lady to show her love and warmth for her family members. Though there are similarities, there are many differences between knit and crochet that will be talked about in this article.

There are many who feel that crochet and knitting are similar; almost same activities. To help you a bit if you are a total novice, the sweater that your mom made for you to wear when you were a kid, and which provided so much of warmth is an example of knitting. In the meantime, the table mat that she crocheted into a typical pattern is an example of crochet.

What is Knit?

First thing to consider in knit is the needle we use. Knitting requires working with two needles at the same time, and they do not have any hook. However, it is possible to make patterns using more than two needles, and there are circular patterns where 4-5 needles are used at the same time. Knitting uses yarn or thread to make finished products. Knit involves pulling the thread over the loops to make fabric patterns. When it comes to the technique used in knitting, the user can work on many loops at the same time. When it comes to the appearance of stitches, knitting looks like a bunch of braids or interlocking V’s. Knitting is done in a softer manner and is reflected in the fabric created, which is softer than what we get after crocheting.

What is Crochet?

First thing to consider in crochet is the needle we use. Crochet makes use of a single needle with a small hook at the top. Crochet uses yarn and thread to make finished products. Crochet involves pulling the thread over the loops to make fabric patterns. When it comes to the technique used in crocheting, one loop is worked through at a time. When it comes to the appearance of stitches, crocheting uses posts to create its fabric. Crochet creations are thicker and heavier.

What is the difference between Knit and Crochet?

• Similar patterns can be made in knitting and crochet using different tools and techniques. But one thing is absolutely common and that is the use of yarn or thread to make finished products.

• Both involve pulling thread over the loops to make fabrics or patterns.

• There is a big difference in the tools used for crocheting and knitting. Crochet makes use of a single needle with a small hook at the top. Knitting requires working with two needles at the same time, and they do not have any hook.

• There is a basic difference in technique of crocheting and knitting. In crocheting, one loop is worked through at a time whereas, in knitting, the user can work on many loops at the same time.

• There is also a difference in the appearance of the stitches of both knitting and crocheting. While knitting looks like a bunch of braids or interlocking V’s, crocheting uses posts to create its fabric.

• Knitted fabric is softer than what we get as a fabric after crocheting. However, one can use either knitting or crocheting to make a sweater or any other clothing to be worn round the year.

• Crocheting is quick and easier than knitting, which can take an eternity to create a fabric. So, if you want to present a handmade baby blanket to a dear one whose shower is after a month, it is prudent to stick to crocheting rather than knitting.

Whichever hobby you may pick, both are interesting and help you to make great creations. Though there are some who would say that crocheting is easier and quicker than knitting, there are knitting enthusiasts who have their points in favor of knitting. One can learn both, and make use of both in the same project even.
