Difference Between Laugh and Smile

Laugh vs Smile

Laugh and Smile are two words in the English language that are often confused due to the appearing similarity in their meanings. Strictly speaking there is some difference between the two words in terms of their meanings.

The word ‘laugh’ is used as a verb and it is used in the sense of ‘opening your mouth and expressing your appreciation of comic sentiment in a loud manner’ as in the sentences

1. He laughed continuously after hearing the joke.

2. She had a good laugh.

In both the sentences you can find that the word ‘laugh’ is used in the sense of ‘opening mouth and expressing your appreciation of comic sentiment in a loud manner’

It is interesting to note that the word ‘laugh’ is used as a verb in the first sentence and it is used as a noun in the second sentence. Thus the word ‘laugh’ can be used both as a verb and as a noun.

On the other hand the word ‘smile’ is used in the sense of ‘gentle laugh’ as in the sentences:

1. She smiled gently.

2. He smiled at her.

In both the sentence the word ‘smile’ is used in the sense of ‘gentle laugh’. It is interesting to note that the word ‘smile’ too like ‘laugh’ can be used both as a noun and as a verb.

It is important to note that teeth will be visible and loud voice will be heard during laugh’. On the other hand teeth will not be visible and no loud voice will be heard during smile. Sometimes you tend to hold your sides too during laugh. In other words it can be said that smile is not accompanied by voice for that matter. These are the important differences between the two words, namely ‘smile’ and ‘laugh’.
