Lay vs Lie in English Grammar
Though there is a difference between lay and lie in English grammar, these two verbs are often confused due to the similarity in their meanings. Actually, they, lay and lie, are used differently with different usage. First of all, lay is used as a verb, adjective and noun. Lie is used as a verb with two different meanings: one meaning refers to making false statements; the other, talks about assuming a horizontal resting position. When lie is used with the second meaning as a verb, then the past tense of that lie is lay. Lie is also used as a noun to refer to false statements. Lie comes from the Old English word licgan. Lay has its origins in the Old English word lecgan.

On the other hand, lie is an irregular verb. The other forms of the irregular verb lie, on the other hand, are lie, lying, lay and lain. It gives the meaning of to be down or to be flat. The irregular verb lie does not require the use of an object, unlike the regular verb lay.

Don’t lie in bed all day. Get to some work instead.
I fell down and lay motionless for a few minutes.
