Left Brain vs Right Brain

Right and left brains are nearly equal in size and functions but there are certain functions particularly done by each side. The special functions of right brain are; random, intuitive, holistic synthesizing, subjective and looks at wholes. Left brain’s special functions are; Logical, sequential, rational, analytical, objective, and looks at parts.

Brain is formed by right and left hemispheres. Brain is part of the central nervous system. Brain controls the muscle movements, sensations and memory etc. It controls the respiration, body temperature, hunger and thirst. But these are controlled by brain stem, which is below the right and left hemispheres. In general the frontal lobe (inside the forehead) of the brain is in charge for the memory. The middle part has two areas. The middle front part will sense the sensation and called sensory area. The area behind that is motor area. Motor area controls the voluntary muscles movement. Usually the human right side of the body is controlled by left side of the brain and left side controlled by right side (with few exceptions).

The supply to the right muscles starts from left side of the brain, cross the mid line (called decussation) and travels in the right side of the spinal cord and supply the muscles in the right side. The right brain nerves will cross the mid line and reach left side muscles. Usually human use the right hand more. So the left side of the brain which controls the right side is named as dominant lobe. However the rule not always true. In few cases the left hand people may have right dominant brain.

Even though the right and left lobes are nearly equal in size and functions, there are special functions that are carried out by dominant lobe. Some duties are carried out by non dominant lobe. Most of the individuals have left dominant lobes. So we will see how the special functions are divided.

Special functions of Left brain: Logical, sequential, rational, analytical, objective, and looks at parts.

Right brain: Random, intuitive, holistic synthesizing, subjective and looks at wholes.

If the right side brain is not functioning left side paralysis may occur. Right side paralysis occurs if left brain fails. But some organs like eyes will be controlled by right and left brain in relation with the visual sensation.

The right and left brain divisions are mainly anatomical. It has functional differences too!! But our complete function depends on both right and left brain.
